Despite how little is going on here, I actually find the Stantons to be the most impressive in the design category. Like how they approach their budget, New Republic does so much with so little, creating a classic silhouette with cool details. This is normal to digital native direct-to-consumer brands though. And honestly, for as low as the prices are, I’m okay with trying things on, then returning them if they’re the wrong size. Like other suede boots and shoes, I don’t recommend wearing these in the rain or other wet conditions, since suede and water don’t mix. Overall, I truly can make a solid recommendation on these shoes. I cannot speak for their QC, but the pair I received are holding up. A crepe sole describes an unrefined latex material that has a crumpled texture. These unrefined soles are springy and provide ample grip, while also lending a distinctive look to the shoes they’re attached to. There was also a stiffness to the lacing system when I synched them down to tie the shoes. Certainly not a deal-breaker, but I surmise that this was primarily due to the lower grade of leather which, of course, is not as soft as full-grain leather is. This is an important distinction to make because leather is no longer defined as “cowhide” as it once was but now includes the hides of other animals. This means that varying scraps of the lowest grade of leather can be rebuilt and embossed into a product that can then be marketed as “genuine leather.”
