In the video below, the author and illustrator talk about the book. What questions would you like to ask them? Arm your kiddies with paint, glitter, lentils or any other material you have available at home and let them loose on the paper plate. Norman frees himself with a ‘slither and a slother, a slip and a slide’. Can you make up your own sentences that use alliteration?

Norman ‘skulked’ off when the snails shouted at him. Can you find other words that can be used to describe how a slug moves? NORMAN The slug with the Silly Shell has been one of Angel’s favourite books for years. She loves Norman’s crazy antics and his determination to fit in with the snails. Its fun bouncypace and beautiful illustrations keeps children entranced until the end. Father Christmas has a cold. What can we do to try and stay healthy? What healthy treats might help him to avoid catching a cold in the future? So when it came to book week and one of my daughters asked to be Norman I embraced the challenge. Orange/pink clothes and a few home-made accessories worked wonders.Norman the Slug is looking for a perfect shell—but can he find his match? From Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, the bestselling, award-winning creators of Barry the Fish with Fingers, I Need a Wee and Supertato! Look at the silhouette picture of Father Christmas flying across the sky. Could you make a similar picture of your own? The snails are forming a triangular pattern in one of the illustrations. Can you investigate triangular numbers? Norman’s shell has lots of shiny parts. Investigate different materials that are shiny and dull. What makes them shiny? What does reflection mean?Norman is a slug, but he wishes he was a snail. The search for a perfect shell brings him across the most interesting possibilities, and the results. . .well, things don't quite turn out the way anyone thought they would.

Words are kept at the minimum to let the story flow. It's concise and to the point, letting the tale and illustrations take lead. Young readers will fall into the story immediately and bounce from situation to situation without the slightest bit of pause. It's great for those who adore silliness and, especially, those with a short attention span—a real plus for younger listeners. Giggles are guaranteed, and there's even a moment of suspense. The ending will either leave a reader thinking, dreaming or simply saying 'huh' and wondering what just hit them. It's a book younger listeners will adore, while older ones will either enjoy it, or shake their heads and toss it to the side. It's an original tale, which hits or doesn't. Norman the Slug is looking for a perfect shell—but can he find his match? Find out in this “fantastically bold and fun picture book that will teach children the importance of accepting who you are” ( Junior News and Mail ).I warmly recommend the book and supported by our super fun Paper Plate Snail Craft, it’s the perfect duo for some quality time at home or within a group preschool setting. Papier-mache the brown tissue paper (you could use brown parcel paper or brown paper bags) around the outside edge to cover the gap. You want this to overlap about a quarter of the way down the side of the doughnut. Use the pink tissue paper to papier-mache the inside gap and bring that up over the doughnut to form the icing. Could you use programming software (e.g. Scratch) to move a slug across the screen to collect some presents?
