In fact, a memoir by Lena Christ, a writer who worked in a Munich restaurant in 1900 and 1901, notes not only was beer served, but also all kinds of lemonades, carbonated water, schorlemorle (wine mixed with sparkling water or apple juice) and radlermasse. The memoir, Erinnerungen einer Überflüssigen ( Remembrances of an Unwanted One), was published in 1912, which clearly predates Kugler’s 1922 claim. She gives no explanation of r adlermasse (the plural of radlermass), which certainly indicates that she was sure her readers would know this drink. The “Radler” meaning is actually taken directly from the Bayerish word “Radler” which is actually, literally, a bicylist. Another popular product from Paulaner is their Oktoberfest beer. The Paulaner Oktoberfest has been served at the famous Oktoberfest festival in Munich since 1818, and it is considered by many to be the quintessential Oktoberfest beer. This beer is a classic Marzen-style lager, which is brewed in the spring and then stored until the festival in the fall. But alas, I’ve come a long way and now, there is one German drink that you’ll find in my hand on a hot, summer day. A Radler! Here in Germany, it’s easy to just go buy a delicious bottle of this “German lemon beer” but in the US it’s a bit harder to come by. And no, it is NOT the same as a shandy! Most people are happy with bog standard beer. They’re happy drinking Carling or Heineken, and I don’t mind that. Each to their own. Paulaner Beer
Fast forward to 2021 and the radler is having a moment, a moment that’s turning into momentum. Stiegl’s boldly colorful cans have spread, and the sales have lured breweries like Schöfferhoffer, Ottakringer, and even some big, recognizable names like Paulaner and Bitburger to test the radler waters in America. The problem with this is the in the US, as much as the craft brew scene is taking over, I still found it quite difficult to find a true Helles. Therefore, a lot of people will say that you can just go with any lighter lager style of beer, but let’s be serious here. A Budweiser is not going to suffice here! In The North Kellerbier – Is a type of unfiltered and unpasteurised German lager. They’re subsequently cloudy in colour and possess a sweet, malty, almost bread-like flavour, due to the brewing yeast that remains in the beer.

A Pils beer is probably going to be way easier to find in the US than a Helles, surprisingly. I’m going to be a snob and say that I don’t think this makes the best radler, but since technically, this is what is more typically used in the North, it still stands that this would be a “German Style Radler!” And hey, beggars can’t be choosers, am I right!? Other Variations Is a radler the same thing as a shandy, as the British call the blend of beer and ginger ale that’s grown in popularity, particularly in the Caribbean?
