It prevents plaque, is antibacterial, reduces bleeding and inflammation, soothes the tissues with botanicals post operatively, while enhancing tissue repair. To decrease staining of teeth and mouth surfaces, brush with toothpaste 3 times daily, brushing more on the stained areas. Use of a "tartar control" toothpaste and electric toothbrush may be more effective. See your dentist at least every 6 months for tooth cleaning/tartar removal. Staining from this medication that may occur on dental work (such as crowns or veneers) usually can only be removed by a dentist/hygienist. To decrease the effect on how food tastes, eat first, followed by tooth brushing and then chlorhexidine rinse. So, what are we going to do about this? We need to target plaque and treat inflammation. Dental hygienists are truly the periodontal oral healthcare champions of our practice. They are on the front line of disseminating oral self-care instructions to our patients on a daily basis. Along with explaining the ravages of periodontal disease to our patients, they give fastidious oral hygiene instruction including brushing, flossing and rinsing. Rinsing should be an integral part of basic oral hygiene instructions.

Common side effects happen in more than 1 in 100 people. They're usually mild and do not last long. Minor irritation and superficial desquamation of the oral mucosa have been noted in patients using chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse. Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility: In a drinking water study in rats, carcinogenic effects were not observed at doses up to 38 mg/kg/day. Mutagenic effects were not observed in two mammalian in vivo mutagensis studies with chlorhexidine gluconate. The highest doses of chlorhexidine used in a mouse dominant-lethal assay and a hamster cytogenetics test were 1000 mg/kg/day and 250 mg/kg/day, respectively. No evidence of impaired fertility was observed in rats at doses up to 100 mg/kg/day The usual dose for children aged 12 and older is up to 5 lozenges a day. Adults can have up to 10 a day. Swish chlorhexidine around in the mouth for 30 seconds. Then spit out. Use the medicine full strength. Do not mix with water before using. Do not swallow the medicine. DosingAlong with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Some people get peeling skin inside their mouth when using chlorhexidine. If this happens to you, stop using the medicine and the side effect will usually clear up. For this medicine, the following should be considered: Allergies The most common side effects associated with chlorhexidine gluconate oral rinse USP, 0.12% are: (1) an increase in staining of teeth and other oral surfaces, (2) an increase in calculus formation, and (3) an alteration in taste perception; see WARNINGS and PRECAUTIONS. Oral irritation and local allergy-type symptoms have been spontaneously reported as side effects associated with use of chlorhexidine gluconate rinse. The following oral mucosal side effects were reported during placebo-controlled adult clinical trials: aphthous ulcer, grossly obvious gingivitis, trauma, ulceration, erythema, desquamation, coated tongue, keratinization, geographic tongue, mucocele, and short frenum. Each occurred at a frequency of less than 1.0%. Chlorhexidine is used to treat gingivitis. It helps to reduce the inflammation (redness) and swelling of your gums and to reduce gum bleeding. There are no common side effects with chlorhexidine skin treatments. However, in rare cases, some people may get red, itchy or irritated skin. It may be because you are using too much lotion or cream where you have folds or creases in your skin, such as around your groin. Talk to a doctor, dentist or pharmacist if these side effects bother you or last for more than a few days:

For patients having coexisting gingivitis and periodontitis, the presence or absence of gingival inflammation following treatment with PerioGard ® should not be used as a major indicator of underlying periodontitis. Use this medication for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before your gingivitis is completely cleared. Periogard will not treat a viral or fungal infection such as cold sores, canker sores, or oral thrush (yeast infection).

Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN USING PERIOGARD® (CHLORHEXIDINE GLUCONATE ORAL RINSE USP, 0.12%): Your dentist has prescribed PerioGard® (Chlorhexidine Gluconate Oral Rinse USP, 0.12%) to treat your gingivitis, to help reduce the redness and swelling of your gums, and also to help you control any gum bleeding. Use PerioGard® regularly, as directed by your dentist, in addition to daily brushing and flossing. Spit out after use; PerioGard® should not be swallowed.
