About this deal

This morning we have an included excursion by coach to the nearby town of Figueres. Figueres, capital of the area and famous for being the town where Salvador Dali was born and spent his childhood. The Dali museum, which is in a former theatre refurbished by Dali himself, is an unmissable experience. Apart from three floors full of the artist's extravagant creations, the building itself is well worth seeing. We return to Roses in the early afternoon, with the rest of the day at leisure. Day 8 - Fly home On arrival at Barcelona or Girona Airport you will be met and transfer to our hotel in Roses, where we stay for seven nights. Seven buffet breakfasts and dinners are included in the hotel. These compartments have the same 2+1 configuration as the newer ones. The windows are slightly smaller than in the newer coaches, but they do open. The first class seats in the older coaches

A few miles further on, the advice to sit on the right hand side of the train proved absolutely right though. As you approach the Landwasser Viaduct, all the interest is on the right hand side of the train, and only passengers sat on the right will get to see the curve of the viaduct and the beautiful valley below. IRCTC has played a significant role in modernizing the Indian Railways and improving the passenger experience, by providing a range of services and facilities to millions of Indian railway users. The 1st class seats are a bigger and more comfortable, and they also have pairs of two single seats facing each other available rather than just a group of four seats, so the carriage has more space overall. Traveling from Italy: Many will find it much easier to get to Milan than Tirano. You can take the regular train from Milan to Tirano, and then get on the Bernina Express. If you’re worried about managing the different legs of the journey, you could also book a tour that handles the whole day trip from Milan for you. To make the most of your trip on the Albula and Bernina railways, you’ll want to make sure you get good seats. Neither of the regional trains we took were at all busy, but we travelled in early May, outside school holidays so they may be busier during the summer or when the Alpine ski resorts are in full swing.Bernina Diavolezza, where you can ride a cable car up to the top of the Diavolezzamountain. When I rode on the Bernina railway in early May 2023 there were still skiers and snowboarders on the mountain slopes at Bernina Diavolezza. Make sure you get on the right carriage – there will be a small electronic screen next to the carriage doors with a number on it. You may have Carriage 10, Set 40, so make sure the carriage you board is number 10! Note: there are two train stations here in Tirano: one is for 'regular' trains to and from Lecco, a town on Lake-Como, and the other for the metre-gauge railway route that carries the Red Train (Bernina Express) to Saint-Moritz. Fold-up wheelchairs and collapsible walking aids may be taken on the train as long as the guest is able to step up 13 inches to get aboard. The Red Train Tours, operated by Ripley's Believe It or Not, has introduced visitors to historic St. Augustine since 1953. The centre of Tirano is dominated by the substantial Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano, the principal monument in the town.Lower Berth Quota: This booking is for senior citizens, differently-abled passengers, and pregnant women. In the newer coaches, there’s a map of the Rhaetian Railways network on the table, labelled with key sights to look out for. There are also announcements made over the train’s PA system when you’re approaching one of the sights, so you don’t miss a thing – for example as we approached the Albula Tunnel there was a short announcement with a little bit of history about the tunnel and some information about the rebuilding project. It’s as close as you can get to the “guided tour” experience of the Bernina Express. Second class – older coaches Bernina Express – Short-distance route 2024 (St. Moritz – Tirano / Tirano – St. Moritz) 10.12.2023 – 14.12.2024, CHF 28.00

The trains I travelled on from Chur to St Moritz had a special photography compartment. This second class area was in one of the newer coaches, but unlike normal second class, the windows opened. The photography compartment with its huge, opening windows, ready for departure at Chur station Premium Tatkal Quota: This booking is similar to Tatkal Reservation but is more expensive and is intended for passengers who need to travel at very short notice. I’m so glad you found it useful! And that is a fantastic question that I WISH I had the answer to!! The truth is, I can’t tell you with 100% certainty every regional train will have windows that open simply because there could be train models in use that vary, which is probably why you also haven’t been able to find a clear answer. As well as being on the Bernina Express route, the Albula Line is also on one of the other famous train routes through Switzerland, the Glacier Express. A red train on the Albula Line’s Landwasser Viaduct Facts about the Albula Line First class seats are wider and more comfortable than second class, but there’s no real difference in service. Second class – newer coaches When searching on Trainline, make sure to book the Bernina Express and not just a regional SBB train that travels the same route, or you’ll miss out on those panoramic Bernina Express windows! When you book with Trainline, choose only the express train indicated by the initials ‘D-Zug’. Avoid booking a train journey that requires changes (the Bernina Express is a direct train) or indicated as RE (regional train). Step 2: Book your seat on the Bernina Express

At St Moritz there’s a convenience store right on the platform which sells surprisingly decent sandwiches and also has a small bakery and coffee machine. Is the Bernina Express worth it? The Bernina Express route travels from Lugano, through northern Italy to Tirano, and up to Chur past the famous Landwasser Viaduct in northern Switzerland. The most popular segment of this route is Tirano to St. Moritz, which is it what I personally traveled.

My partner took this photo of the train going across the Landwasser Viaduct. My photos looking the other way towards the tunnel had lots of reflections from the train windows. Even on this one, you can see the reflection of my phone and my fingers.
