About this deal

Some of the float attachments on the market are a bit clunky, and I like these little Middy ones. The tiny eye means you don't need a big stop knot. It is then that George Holland came up with the idea. He had a dream about how he could use a float that slid on the line and woke up saying, "Eh! Missus, missus, I've had a wonderful dream." To which his wife replied, "Thou hast lad? Well prithee get up and go fish it." Developing the slider The second modification is down to my son, Dave Jnr, who fine-tuned his floats by wrapping lead wire on the tubing, just to get each float settled perfectly.

The skill is in understanding the purpose of each of your dropper shot and ‘reading’ the movement of the float. I realise that this may not be easy for some anglers, and practice and experience helps enormously. Indeed, for me, getting a big, crude looking, slider float to show me beautifully exaggerated bites in tough conditions is one of the pinnacles of the art. Once the feed has been introduced, it’s time to fish! By casting direct off the bulk, the float will sit on top of it, and a simple cast, feathering the line on impact is all that is required. I then sink the rod tip, give the reel a couple of turns to sink the line and open the bail arm to feed the line out until the float hits the stop knot. Once the float settles, you can read any indications on the way through while the hook length reaches the bottom. The hook itself is either a 16 or 14 PR344. This is a strong pattern yet fine enough for using smaller baits. I drop to an 18 in the colder months. The main species I target are skimmers, hybrids, roach, bream and occasionally a rogue tench. After all, my hook baits are double maggot or caster/corn or double worm, so a decent hook is required. Feeding

Even for depths well under the length of the rod, I often slide the float the last couple of feet. It's much easier to cast 7 or 8' than 9 or 10'. The position of the stop knot above the float will depend upon the depth. Basically, it’s a case of attaching a plummet to the hook, sliding the stop knot along the line to guess the depth and casting the rig to see if you’ve found the correct depth. Obviously the float will sink if the rig is set too shallow. Basically, that single stop knot positioned above the float takes the place of the split shot that you’d normally use around the float’s base.Get the basics right and it’s a great method and a really enjoyable way to fish. Hopefully, my advice and tips will convince you to give it a go! There are few anglers better than Alan Scotthorne on the slider float, so here’s a masterclass at Chesterfield’s Poolsbrook Reservoir with the five-time world champ! Finally, another deep reservoir, Snitterfield nr Stratford on Avon can be fished with Leamington AA membership and is absolutely stuffed with tench, crucians, bream and even some big carp. Milo Colombo. When I needed help in understanding Italian rigs and set ups, I went to the 'maestro' for help and inspiration It's a tried and tested set-up that Drennan Team England have implemented and used for over decade. The rig itself is so simple; being as comfortable at catching bream at 45 metres, as catching roach and skimmers at 17 metres.

It’s been great to flex the slider gear once again and really helped me prepare for the busy international schedule I’ve got this year. Get out there and give it a go yourself – you’ll soon realise that it’s a lot more fun than the feeder! Thread the float onto the line taking care that the lower end of the angled hole goes through first and the line comes out of the higher end of the attachment

For the stop knot, I like to use a length of Power Gum as this does not damage the line and can be easily removed after the session. I've mentioned Michael Schlögl and his great floats a couple of times already in this article. In both cases he's brought an innovative twist to both English and Italian sliders, but in addition to these, he has developed some uniquely Germanic angles on slider fishing, which I'm describing here as legitimate techniques. You may have been aware that the floats I have already mentioned are all fitted with a simple brass rod for loading. I have not mentioned any of the many floats available from Sensas, Colmic, Browning etc,. with brass loading rings that can be set so they take approximately 20% of the load in the base of the float and the rest down the line. The reason is simple as I'm describing the classic English slider set up and on this, a float adaptor is used with a flattened eye to catch the stop knot. These float adaptors have several advantages: Tangles: None! Punching into a wind is the worst cause of all slider tangles, yet this rig proved perfect. I use home made float adapters which are basically a bit of silicon with a swivel pushed into them to attach the float to the line. These slide well and allow the float to fold over on the strike giving a more direct line of pull when you strike - important when your fishing in deep water.
