About this deal

N.B. This advice does not relate to multi-catch mouse live traps. The welfare impact of such traps has not been determined and so at this time we would not recommend their use. Mice and rats are best distinguished by the size of their droppings. Mice droppings are less than 0.75cm, while rats are significantly larger.

Respiratory sensitising (Sr) – Recognised respiratory sensitiser: comes from a harmonised C&L classifying the substance as Resp. Sens. 1, 1A, or 1B and/or an entry in the Candidate list. Broad agreement: comes from industry data where a majority of data submitters agree the substance is a respiratory sensitiser. Minority position: comes from industry data where a minority of data submitters indicate the substance is a respiratory sensitiser. More information about respiratory sensitiser here. It is a Schedule 6 poison and a restricted chemical product and can only be supplied to or used by an authorised person (NSW Department of primary industries: Pesticides used in the management of vertebrate pests). Note that for readability purposes, only the pictograms, signal words and hazard statements referred in more than 5% of the notifications under CLP are displayed.

Anticoagulant poisons work by preventing the liver from recycling Vitamin K. Vitamin K is essential to make the blood clotting agents which protect from too much bleeding. With enough exposure to anticoagulant internal bleeding occurs which kills the target species. What does the law state about mouse poison?Meehan, A.P. 1984. Rats and Mice: Their Biology and Control. Rentokil Ltd.: Felcourt, East Grinstead, UK. If the substance is covered by more than one CLH entry (e.g. disodium tetraborate EC no. 215–540–4, is covered by three harmonisations: 005–011–00–4; 005–011–01–1 and 005–011–02–9), CLH information cannot be displayed in the InfoCard as the difference between the CLH classifications requires manual interpretation or verification. If a substance is classified under multiple CLH entries, a link to the C&L Inventory is provided to allow users to view CLH information associated with the substance and no text is automatically generated for the InfoCard. Non-target animals (including pets) may be killed or injured and children may be injured if traps are not suitably protected.

For rats it’s important to identify areas of activity; faeces are usually a good indicator. Grain or Paste can be placed down burrows. Bait stations can be located along the runs between burrows and likely feeding points. All rodenticides which contain anticoagulant activity were limited to professional use only at the beginning of 2018. Instead, homeowners started to use AC-containing rodenticides. Earlier there have been some occasional rumours of AC poisonings in Sweden, Norway and the Netherlands. AC was historically used as an anesthetic for example for laboratory mice. Its effect as a rodenticide is based on its fast-acting anesthetic properties. The substance itself should be well-protected inside a mousetrap but when a cat finds an apathetic, slow-moving mouse, it tends to prey on it. AC then causes poisoning to the cat as well. Dogs more likely to eat the poison itself. There are 4 types of rule that a product may need to meet (on their own or in combination) to be granted origin. Remove access to food – get rid of whatever they are eating or prevent their access to it (e.g. by rat-proofing buildings). Change feeder designs, feeder positions, and feeding regimes so that the birds/animals you want to feed can access the food but rats cannot or are more exposed to predation. Chloralose is often abused for its avicide properties. In the United Kingdom, protected birds of prey have been killed using the chemical. Poisons should only be used as a very last resort where non-toxic and less-toxic methods have been deployed and a significant rodent problem still exists and is a threat to human health. Remove spilled food and do not leave pet or other animal food available; store food in rodent-proof containers with secure lids.
