Bluewashing is deceptive marketing used to make you believe a company is better and more ethical than it is.

The parking lot is quite small next to the trailhead, so just park alongside the should of the road soon after entering into the formal entrance of the Tonto National Forest. We parked in the long line of cars and had a 5-10 minutes walk to the trailhead. As soon as you make it into the wash the trail eases into a stroll all the way to the streams. There are plenty of spots to rest and find some shade while chowing down on rehydrating. Many businesses are still bluewashing today to appeal to conscious consumers, especially in the fashion industry. The market for ethical and sustainable products is growing rapidly, creating new opportunities for businesses.

Businesses have a strong role to play in improving the state of the planet and its inhabitants. They have to develop and communicate their role in environmental and social stewardship to earn the trust of consumers. The term bluewashing, however, might be new to some and focusses more on the labour conditions and human rights within the garment industry rather than environmental issues. It’s also often associated with the blue logo of the United Nations (UN) and more specifically the UN Global Compact. Bluewash and greenwash are used by businesses and organizations to respectively appear to be more socially responsible and environmentally friendly than they truly are. Critics argue that such voluntary initiatives, despite aiming to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, are merely used for economic gains and public relations to improve corporate images.

Bluewashing was first used in relation to the United Nations and their Global Compact. A report found that 40% of corporate members who volunteered for the compact did not use its ten principles to make any policy reforms. [5] The compact is non-binding and the United Nations has publicly stated that it does not have the resources to monitor the bodies who are supposedly participating in it. [6] Therefore, concerns were raised that participating companies were using the compact as a way to "blue wash" their reputation aka improve public perception of their morals without legitimately introducing any policy reforms. [7] [8] The companies who joined were accused of using the United Nations' "excellent social reputation" to improve their own standing. [9] The word blue was inspired by the colour of the United Nations' flag. [10] By better, we mean more eco-friendly, more socially responsible, or just to boost the public perception of a company. The bottom line is, bluewashing is deceptive and bad for consumers (and usually by extension, the planet). Many companies associate themselves with the UNGC to only demonstrate corporate social responsibility and sustainable governance and give off the image that they have ethical standards. This is about companies making you think their products are good for the oceans – or at least, don’t harm them – when actually they do. AKA, they joined the pact but didn’t change any of their company policies to meet the principles.
