Next up, Invitation to Draw: 99 Drawing Prompts Designed to Inspire Kids’ Creativity by Jean Van’t Hul is a Roost Books title that is grandchild approved. I'm here because I like origami, quilling, and having fun with paper. I'm also slow to actually make things, so I haven't gotten around to creating any of the projects here - an issue which might be fixed in the future. Overall this is an interesting book to use, a good one for beginners as there are lots of easy projects to start with, then moving onto more involved papercraft projects. For each project in this book, you can see another project of the artist who created it - an object of the same type as the one you can make by following the steps, but more advanced, or made on a professional level. This means you can get a bit of know-how, and also an idea about the possibilities of the craft, when you're advanced enough to know what you're doing. Overall, this was a delightful introduction to papercraft, and I enjoyed reading it! I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into papercraft, and for any library craft sections. Some of the projects would also work well for library programming for children, adults, or teens. From the introduction: “Helen Hiebert is a seasoned author artist, papermaker, and teacher who has created a comprehensive exploration of paper arts in The Art of Papercraft. This book will prove to be an excellent resource for teachers and students alike… All of the projects are fun one-sheet wonders that introduce essential cutting, folding and assembly techniques. Each project is simple enough for beginners while being sufficiently sophisticated for the seasoned crafter.”Created by various designers, the one-sheet projects shown in the book are broadly categorised under folding, cutting and construction. Each project is visually explained with step-by-step illustrations and includes materials and tools required. Paper is not only a means to convey information or images, but is also used as a medium in architecture, jewelry making, crafts, and even fashion. Hiebert’s well organized manual shows (both in written directions and pictures!) how cutting, folding, twisting, weaving, crumpling, and even tearing can turn a single sheet into unbelievable forms. She starts with paper sources, including how to make your own.

The Folding chapter provides eight projects for a variety of ways to fold a piece of paper. Each project comes with written instructions alongside photographs for each of the steps in the written part. It tells you also the size of paper required if any tools are needed or templates. I was not expecting much from this one, thinking it would be a simplistic book on how to make some simple projects like pinwheels, top and side fold cards, and that what is described as unique is not so unique. But I was pleasantly surprised. I like that Ms. Hiebert laid things out so clearly. This seems to me a book that can cater to an audience of both beginners and some with experience in crafting. I like that she included a couple of glue recipes in the materials description section, and that several of the projects, like the origami ones, had nice step by step pictorials.QUILLFlD CARD Quilled card Quilling is easíen tharí it looks, evsn if it seerns intímídattng at first. You w1ll need Every chapter has clear photographs of tools needed, sample papers and artist inspirations. Basic techniques are folding, cutting, gluing, stitching and embellishing. Examples of the many projects range from origami candy dishes and Halloween decorations to lanterns, plantable paper, mini-books, cards, envelopes and more. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Storey Publishing via NetGalley for my honest review of the book Art of Papercraft Unique One-Sheet Projects Using Origami, Weaving, Quilling, Pop-Up, and Other Inventive Techniques by Helen Hiebert. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own thoughts, feelings and viewpoints of the book. When I started reading the section with projects, I was a little wary at the simplicity of them. However, the book showcases a nice progression of projects. They are organized by different papercraft techniques, and progress from easy to more and more difficult. The photo and text instructions are well laid out and fun to follow, and there are over forty projects to try out. Hiebert treats us to full-color renditions of her paper-thin fine art, beautifully photographed and presented for all of us to admire. Like a cookbook, this author shares the necessary tools, techniques, and methods for creating paperwork masterpieces. Then she instructs, informs, and inspires.

The projects are quite varied, from decorative origami pieces, to a kite, to the wearable cuff. Some are simple, and could be done with children with supervision probably, and some more sophisticated in nature, and good jump off points for mixed media projects. I quite like the pleated lantern, and have done some things myself with sewn paper in the past. The quilled snowflake is lovely and something I am seriously considering making myself soon. I also like the slice form heart project. I have admired many other slice form pieces I have seen before, but have not tried it myself, so this is tempting. Would you like to learn a bit more about papercrafting besides just "cut here" and "fold there"? This is the book for you! Note: you'll also learn where to cut and fold, but you get the idea lol! There are lots of fun projects interspersed with profiles of paper artists featured in the book. The projects take the reader through a variety of techniques and skill levels, and the instructions are clear and well-photographed, making it easy to learn and improve one's skills. There's a visual guide section discussing ways to make your own paper, how to decorate paper, and fastening/connection methods. The last methods mentioned are shown in the book, but I understand not showing all the papermaking and decorating techniques, as the author does have a separate book on that. Hiebert includes a nice chonky resources list of suppliers, books, and where to find more on the artists featured in the book, and all the templates for the projects. While I think this is a fine book for beginners, to me it feels most suitable to those who've had some experience with papercrafting and want to learn more. I'd say this is a book anyone interested in papercraft should have on their shelf. I come from a long line of artists and crafters, and paper crafting is just another way of expressing our creativity and talent. Hiebert’s book offers new ways to look at manipulating paper in ways you might not have considered before.
