About this deal

People often think cactus do not need feeding but this is not the case, they too have basic nutritional requirements, just like any otherplant, to successfully perform all their botanical processes to thrive. Place your orchid in a warm bright space in indirect sunlight and give it time to rejuvenate. In the wild they are used to filtered light so make sure they are not scorched by direct sunlight in a hot spot. They thrive in a constant temperature of around 18°C / 64°F.

Fungus gnats thrive on moist soil. If you see these tiny flies on the soil surface, reduce your watering schedule and Spray with Plantsmith Protecting Bug Control Spray. A gravel mulch on the pot’s surface may also help. You can also apply parasitic nematodes, Steinernema feltiae, as a biological control to try and quash the infestation. The nematodes are mixed in a watering can and then applied over the soil as part of your normal watering regime. Always read instructions carefully, and wear gloves when using. Your Contributions are not used to harass or threaten (in the legal sense of those terms) any other person and to promote violence against a specific person or class of people. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is a long-flowering, evergreen, perennial succulent originating from Madagascar. These fairly slow-growing plants have ovate scalloped-edged leaves which tinge red in direct sunlight so place in a bright indirectly lit spot. The delicate flowers of Kalanchoe. Once bulblets have formed you can carefully remove these and pot on separately. This is a great way to increase your own collection or share plants with friends. With the holiday season fast approaching, many of us will be thinking of a few weeks away from home but when you are a plant parent ensuring your houseplants survive the summer break is a top priority. One way to get round this is to make sure your plant collection has a good selection of drought tolerant plants. Aloe vera is another plant that releases oxygen at night making it a good choice for the bedroom. It is also a good air purifier, removingformaldehyde and benzene. Just be aware that although this drought tolerant succulent has great health benefits to humans, this plant is toxic to cats and dogs. Image: Debi Holland Spider Plant, Chlorophytum comosum

This is a small plant growing 15-25cm (6-10 inches) tall with stunning silver leaves dotted in eye-catching leopard-like spots. If you are new to houseplants then this is a great plant for beginners. So how do you look after it? Light Keep your Schlumbergera’s soil moist. As with many houseplants, let the soil dry out between waterings and then give them a good soak and allow the water to drain through the pot. Waterlogging can cause root rot.If you notice roots circling the rim of the pot, it could mean the substrate is too dense for roots to grow through or that it has deteriorated; whatever the reason change your growing medium. Repot Aerial roots are the orchid’s blood vessels, coated in cells called Velamen which act like a sponge. Healthy air roots are silvery-white and rounded, unhappy roots are beige and shrivelled. Ailing roots could be due to low humidity so snip away the shrivelled roots, mist with Plantsmith’s Invigorating Orchid Care Mist and place your plant on a tray of watered gravel or small stones, this will raise humidity. In the wild these plants would obtain all their nutrients from the soil. Roots would absorb a long list of beneficial macro and micro nutrients and trace minerals such as iron, calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, boron and zinc. These all play an important role in the plant’s overall vitality so when a plant spends its life in a pot it is up to us to provide the food or the plant will suffer over time. What are the three main nutrients needed for healthy houseplant growth? Feed every couple of weeks when your orchid is actively producing flowers and leaves. Flush water through the growing medium and let it drain then water again using Plantsmith Nurturing Orchid Feed and Tonic. Our professional orchid feed formulation contains 12 essential plant-boosting nutrients – everything your orchid needs to thrive. Plantsmith ‘ Fortifying Houseplant Tonic’ is a professional houseplant food containing 13 essential nutrients including kelp which stimulates cell growth. Shake the bottle and mix 5 ml (approx. 4 pumps) into a litre of tepid rainwater and apply at the base of the silver squill once a month. Orchid leaves have a large surface area and are prone to collecting dust so take a damp cloth and gentle wipe the leaves down to remove dirt. This will ensure the plant can easily photosynthesise and stops dust clogging up pores or hindering sunlight. Clean dust from the leaves to aid photosynthesis. Image: Debi Holland Deadhead and PruneNitrogen helps produce proteins which make our cherished leafy green foliage. If a plant is nitrogen deficient you will see leaves turning pale yellow or green; alternatively too much nitrogen will send your houseplant into overdrive producing an abundance of leaves. The balance needs to be right. Orchids detest soggy roots and will not thank you for sitting them in a pot of water so the best way to water is remove them from their pot and dunk or flush with rainwater whether in a sink or bath and let the water drip through. Return to their pot once excess water has dissipated.

If your orchid is not producing flowers it will be due to light or temperature so do not be afraid to move your orchid to a different area in your home. It can sometimes be trial and error until you find the perfect spot. Water Make sure your plant gets around 14 hours of darkness a night, in a cool room and bring it out into indirect bright light in the day. Keep it well misted to increase humidity. Repeat this cycle for a few weeks and buds will break. Buds develop for about six weeks before flowering. Start feeding houseplants from early spring when they emerge from dormancy and respond to the increase in light levels and develop new growth. At this time of year, shops are flooded with Thanksgiving cactus, Schlumbergera truncata, Christmas cactus, Schlumbergera bridgesii;these profusely flowering plants offer months of colourful blooms which inject a burst of colour in to winter days. The Thanksgiving cactus makes an ideal Christmas gift for plant lovers. Image: Debi Holland Strong summer sun may leave soil parched and can scorch leaves creating brown dead-looking patches along the leaf margins; this is where excess moisture has been evaporated out of the leaf before the plant has had a chance to replenish it. Thriving in temperatures from 12°C – 26°C (55°F –80°F) with low humidity they will pretty much take care of themselves, just dead head spent blooms and occasionally water when the top inch of soil dries out. Don’t over water them or you will kill your plant with kindness. When they need repotting refresh in a slightly larger pot of peat-free soil and feed monthly fromspringto autumn.
