About this deal

Continue to add compost as necessary until the compost reaches about 5cm (2in) from the top of the barrel. Add some stakes into the top of the compost to keep the plants from drooping over the side. Over the next few weeks and months the potato plants will grow and mature and it is often helpful to stake up the plants to give them a bit of support. high x 43cm (17) diameter 60cm (24) high x 43cm (17) diameter Manufactured from polypropylene/ABS material this potato barrel is easy to assemble and requires just 5 seed potatoes and 90 litres of compost This Potato Barrel is an attractive Victorian style tub providing the complete system for growing potatoes or any root vegetable

You need 80 litres of a good general purpose compost (generally one very large bag). Do NOT use ordinary garden soil.

Drill small holes along both sides of each stave just beneath where they overlap — these allow air circulation between layers which helps keep temperatures cooler inside; Keep the rest of the seed potatoes in a cool place and replant the whole barrel after you have harvested your first crop. Once you have the barrel, decide how many medium sized first early seed potatoes you are going to be able to fit in the barrel, this will depend upon the size of the barrel - a 15cm (6in) space needs to be left between each seed potato and the sides of the barrel - sometimes placing one seed potato in the centre and spacing others between it and the sides of the barrel will maximise the number you can fit. Once you know how many seed potatoes you need, select them and chit them (see the general notes for chitting seed potatoes). If you plan to plant a second crop for harvest in the autumn, select additional seed potatoes and store in a dark, cool place.

Keep the barrel well watered (but not waterlogged), especially in sunny weather. Include in each watering some proprietary tomato feed or similar. Cut each potato into pieces with at least one "eye" present – this is where new growth sprouts from; Allow them dry out overnight before placing seed side-down onto about four inches deep soil level inside the potting mix which should be slightly moistened beforehand with water.

Sweet Potato Tots — The Polite Pig

Once you have harvested your potatoes use the compost to as an excellent top dressing for your vegetable patch or flower beds. It is not good to use the same compost for another crop of potatoes as this can lead to problems with potato diseases. Tong prides itself in manufacturing high-quality potato grading and handling machines, designed to meet your current requirements, with your future potato handling needs in mind. Cover the stones with about 12.5cm (5in) of well rotted compost mixed with a good general fertiliser. The compost will have been exhausted by the growing potatoes, so don't reuse it but add it to the compost heap or dig it in as a soil conditioner where it can be left until the crop is finished - ideally choose a sunny but sheltered position.

It measures 60cm in height and is 43cm in diameter and will hold up to 80 litres of compost. Where to Place your Potato Barrel? For early potatoes it is recommended that you start the growing process in the barrel for 2 to 3 weeks in a greenhouse or shed. Place three or four-inch layers of soil in the bottom and position potato pieces (eyes pointing upwards); The potato foilage will continue to grow unit it is 1 or 2 feet (30-60cm) above the top of the barrel. Watering and Feeding your Potato CropFrom the research I have done, I have found that mid to late season do better growing in a tower method. Early season potatoes like Yukon gold only produce once and won’t produce roots up the stem.
