About this deal

You will need two drives if you want to cache for both writing and reading -- so it's a good idea to get two. If you aren’t exposing your NAS to the internet, some of these settings won’t affect you. However, it’s still a good idea to change them. If you are exposing your NAS to the internet, these settings are mandatory! 3.1 How to Setup Synology NAS DSM Update Settings In the first of our enterprise workloads, we measured a long sample of random 4K performance with 100% write and 100% read activity. Looking at IOPS, the Synology DiskStation DS1821+ HDD configuration recorded 1,550 IOPS write and 595 IOPS read in SMB, while hitting 1,575 IOPS write and 4,153 IOPS read in iSCSI. With SSDs, it showed, expectedly, significant gains (as is the case in the rest of the performance review) with 38,633 IOPS write and 26,209 IOPS read in SMB and 37,339 IOPS write, and 99,988 IOPS read in iSCSI. For our last 4K test, we looked at standard deviation. In our HDD configuration, we recorded figures of 315.5ms write and 446.1ms read in SMB while iSCSI hit 242.7ms write and 56.9ms read in iSCSI. With SSDs, performance improved to 10.5ms read and 9.22ms write in SMB and 14.5ms write and 2.17ms read in iSCSI. While this certainly makes them a perfect fit for enterprise-level data centers, they are also a great choice for SMBs that need to store huge amounts of data and for those who want to future-proof their repository (capacity-wise). So, it made sense for us to see what it is capable of outputting using some of the leading desktop (or SMB) NAS form factors.

In 4K average latency (where lower is better), the Synology DS1821+ posted 165.11ms write and 429.74ms read in SMB, and 162.92ms write with a much lower 61.63ms read in iSCSI (HDD configuration). Using SSDs, the latency fell to 6.62ms and 9.77ms write/read in SMB and 6.85ms and 2.56ms write/read in iSCSI. NOTE: Technically, you only need to create one “allow” rule which is a combination of all of the ports that you’d like permitted. However, if you want to allow traffic to certain ports by IP subnet (for example), you should have one rule per service/application. TLDR: create one rule per application so that you can easily manage them. NOTE: If you cannot find your Synology NAS, follow this guide to locate the Synology NAS on your network. 1.2 How to Setup a Storage Pool/Volume on a Synology NAS DSM will install and reboot when finished. After a few minutes have passed, open a new tab and navigate to http://find.synology.com. Your DiskStation should show up and you will be able to connect. Powered by an AMD Ryzen CPU, the Synology DS1821+ is an easy-to-use 8-bay NAS aimed more at SMBs that require a bit more performance and capacity. It features two M.2 slots for NVMe SSD cache as well as 10GbE connectivity (though this must be added via one of its PCIe expansions slots). Overall, the Synology DiskStation DS1821+ is a strong performer for an SMB NAS.PCIe add-in cards, expansion units, and storage drives are sold separately. Refer to the compatibility list for compatible devices. What's more, each server has two built-in M.2 slots to host two NVMe SSDs -- a good upgrade option if you use the server for applications that can benefit from caching. There's no way to use these slots for general storage. Give your storage pool a description if you’d like, select the RAID type you will be using and select Next to proceed.

This might not seem important on the surface, but understanding how your storage is being used is integral! 2.5 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) After that, you can install them via the slot on the server's underside. The process is easy and painless. All you need is a small Philip-head screwdriver. Synology DS1821+: SSD caching upgrade While we went through the initial Synology NAS setup process, there are many additional items you can use your NAS for. I have a bunch of tutorials that I will link below showing how to complete certain actions. Keep in mind, there are a ton of apps you can install and these are my favorite Synology NAS apps that you can install! 4.1 Accessing your Synology NAS Outside of Your Local Network During the memory test, your Synology NAS will be rebooted. It will recover after another reboot if its memory is normal and passes the test. However, if the memory test fails to finish or shows that there is an error, the memory may be faulty. In this case, you are strongly recommended to return your Synology NAS for repair. Just in case you have installed a non-Synology memory module, please remove it and rerun the memory test. Though once again you should remember that Synology do not recommend using memory modules that are not from Synology themselves, so this test may not be indicative of the health of unofficial memory in your Synology NAS. Alternatively, you can perform as many actions and processes as possible (scans, copy/pastes, thumbnail generation, transcode a 4K file, RAID changes, synchronisation, etc) at once to see how the task manager and resource monitor behaves in the Synology DS1821+. It should spike each time and at a greater height as you do more and more and once it exceeds the memory you had previously installed, this is a good confirmation that the installation is working fine. cứng SSD M.2 NVMe thuộc dòng sản phẩm Synology SNV3400 có thể lắp đặt trên các khe cắm M.2 tích hợp để kích hoạt bộ nhớ đệm SSD hoặc tạo vùng lưu trữ SSD. For maximum latency, we saw 894.8ms to 6,057.28ms in SMB and 920.6ms to 6,891.26ms in iSCSI in our WD Red HDD configuration, while our Samsung SSD configuration posted 35.78ms to 425.22ms and 51.13ms to 105.24ms in SMB and iSCSI, respectively. That amount is enough for general usage, but a memory upgrade is a must if you want to get the most out of the server. Synology hardware upgrades: Here's my new Synology DS1821+ and the upgrade parts, including a 10Gbps PCIe add-on card, a 32GB DDR4 RAM kit, and two 1.92GB Seagate IronWolf NVMe SSDs. Compared to the fixed 16 thread, 16 queue max workload we performed in the 100% 4K write test, our mixed workload profiles scale the performance across a wide range of thread/queue combinations. In these tests, we span workload intensity from 2 thread/2 queue up to 16 thread/16 queue. With HDD throughput, SMB posted a range of 344 IOPS to 385 IOPS while iSCSI hit a range of 575 IOPS to 1,839 IOPS. Using SSDs, iSCSI was by far the best configuration with 8,813 IOPS at 2T/2Q and finishing off at 47,941 IOPS at 16T/16Q. Accelerated Performance - 177% higher 4K random read IOPS and 76% faster sequential write speeds compared to its predecessor When the install finishes, launch the Snapshot Replication application. Select Snapshots and select settings on the folder you’d like to schedule protection for.

The WD Gold 22TB drive is designed to lower TCO for organizations, as they allow for more capacity without having to increase physical footprint or the same capacity at a lower physical footprint. Not only that, the Golds are one of the best-performing 3.5″ HDDs we’ve seen in our lab. With that, let's proceed with the upgrade. For this post, I did the upgrades on a DS1821+, but the processes and parts are the same on a DS1621+. Synology DS1821+: RAM upgrade As usual, we used the DSM Storage Manager app to manage the WD Gold populated-DS1821+. It also makes it incredibly easy to set up RAID, pools, and volumes as well as to view the health of the drive. If you don’t intend on exposing your NAS to the internet, I wouldn’t say it’s necessary, but if you do intend on exposing it, I would change these ports. Data scrubbing inspects your volumes and modifies detected inconsistencies. In simple terms, this protects your NAS against bit-rot. There isn’t a specific schedule that’s mandatory, but it’s a good idea to run it at a minimum, bi-annually. It's even older than that -- Synology first announced it in 2020. But it's still going to be the latest Synology 8-bay NAS for homes and SMBs for a while -- Synology likely won't release its replacement this year. No matter the use case, however, the massive WD Gold 22TB drives will give organizations a lot of flexibility on how they manage their data with tons of opportunities for scalability. For my case, though, I used the first option for my DS1821+ and the third for my DS1621+ -- two ports are always better than one. But no matter which card you get, the installation is the same. Extra: Synology DS1621+ to DS1821+ in-place upgrade

Enable UPS support and select the UPS type that you own. You can then configure the time before your NAS enters safe mode. 2.6 How to Setup Notifications on a Synology NAS Our Enterprise Synthetic Workload Analysis includes four profiles based on real-world tasks. These profiles have been developed to make it easier to compare to our past benchmarks as well as widely-published values such as max 4k read and write speed and 8k 70/30, which is commonly used for enterprise drives.By default, Synology NASdevices have a bunch of different ways that they can be monitored. However, monitoring does very little if you aren’t being notified of issues that have occurred on your NAS. Our next benchmark measures 100% 8K sequential throughput with a 16T16Q load in 100% read and 100% write operations. Here, the DS1821+ was able to reach 51,118 IOPS write and 56,348 IOPS read in SMB and 52,857 IOPS write, and 57,085 IOPS read in iSCSI (HDDs). In our SSD configuration, the Synology NAS recorded a minor improvement with 53,992 IOPS write and 56,436 IOPS read in SMB. We saw the best performance using iSCSI with writes and reads of 56,181 IOPS and 57,101 IOPS, respectively. In a way, this post is about Synology hardware upgrades, specifically in RAM, storage, and 10Gbps network speed. In other words, if you're looking for the best 10Gbps NAS for the home (or small office), you're at the right place. If you're mulling over the two, that is the only point you should consider.
