Ballantyne, R. M. (1911) [1858], The Coral Island: A Tale of the Pacific Ocean, Thomas Nelson and Sons, OCLC 540728645 One of the writers influenced by him was Robert Louis Stevenson, who was so influenced by The Coral Island, that he based portions of Treasure Island on it. Also, The Coral Island can be considered one forerunner of the genera of 'deserted on a desert island' that is a hugely influential literary theme.

While Peterkin ran on in this style my faculties became quite clear again, and I began to understand my position. “What do you mean by saying I half-choked you, Peterkin?” said I. I smiled at this question, and answered that, as our watches were at the bottom of the sea, I could not tell, but it was a little past sunrise. Born in Edinburgh in 1825, and raised there, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children and the youngest son. Tutored by his mother and sisters, his only formal education was a brief period at Edinburgh Academy in 1835–37. At the age of 16 he travelled to Canada, where he spent five years working for the Hudson's Bay Company, trading with the First Nations for furs. [1] He returned to Scotland in 1847 and for some years worked for the publisher Messrs Constable, [2] first as a clerk [1] and then as a partner in the business. [3] During his time in Canada he had helped to pass the time by writing long letters to his mother– to which he attributed "whatever small amount of facility in composition [he] may have acquired" [4]– and began his first book. [5] Ballantyne's Canadian experiences formed the basis of his first novel, The Young Fur Traders, published in 1856, [1] the year he decided to become a full-time writer and embarked on the adventure stories for the young with which his name is popularly associated. [2] At last we came among the Coral Islands of the Pacific; and I shall never forget the delight with which I gazed—when we chanced to pass one—at the pure white, dazzling shores, and the verdant palm-trees, which looked bright and beautiful in the sunshine. And often did we three long to be landed on one, imagining that we should certainly find perfect happiness there! Our wish was granted sooner than we expected. Beach Deluxe– The Beach Deluxe room also accommodates up to four guests comfortably and offers a double bed or two single beds. This room measures in at approximately 323 square feet and has a private balcony or terrace with a partial ocean view. Each Beach Deluxe has a private bathroom and comes with a refrigerator and coffee/tea maker.Much better; but we have no ropes to bind it together with. Perhaps we may find something hereafter that will do as well, but in the meantime let us try the tree.” A fun and tropical restaurant located on the west side of Coral Island, Freedom Restaurant serves up a tantalizing variety of international cuisine. This restaurant is open from November to April when the island is experiencing its dry season. Islander Sports Bar and Restaurant Rawai Phuket Kutzer, M. Daphne (2000), Empire's Children: Empire and Imperialism in Classic British Children's Books, Routledge, ISBN 978-0-8153-3491-0 Whale Shark– Measuring in at up to 30 feet in length, the whale shark is a docile creature that can be found feasting quietly on the ocean floor. This shark features beautiful patterns and is majestic to look at.

Roving has always been, and still is, my ruling passion, the joy of my heart, the very sunshine of my existence. In childhood, in boyhood, and in man’s estate I have been a rover; not a mere rambler among the woody glens and upon the hill-tops of my own native land, but an enthusiastic rover throughout the length and breadth of the wide, wide world. Peterkin was silent. In his sudden recollection of the telescope he had quite overlooked the absence of the sun. Reiff, Raychel Haugrud (2010), William Golding: Lord of the Flies, Marshall Cavendish, ISBN 978-0-7614-4700-9 The exploration of the relationship between nature and evangelical Christianity is another typically Victorian theme. Coral connects the two ideas. Literary critic Katharine Anderson explains that coral jewellery, popular in the period, had a "pious significance". [d] The "enchanted garden" of coral the boys discover at the bottom of their island's lagoon is suggestive of "missionary encounters with the societies of the Pacific Island". [25] In Victorian society coral had been given an "evangelical framing", and the little "coral insect" responsible for building coral reefs [e] mirrored the "child reader's productive capacity as a fundraiser for the missionary cause"; literary critic Michelle Elleray discusses numerous children's books from the early to mid-19th century, including The Coral Island, in which coral plays such an educational role. [54]The main difference between the two island books, it seems to me, is the age of the characters -- teenagers in The Coral Island, doing resourceful teenage things that could have come out of Scouting for Boys, if the latter had been published by then. Lord of the Flies has pre-teen children, less resourceful, more easily distracted. And where The Coral Island has savages becoming civilised, thanks to the influence of missionaries, Lord of the Flies has the civilised becoming savages, in the absence of such influences. This book was written in first-person point-of-view, and Ralph Rover is our very own ‘Story-teller’, or narrator. Ralph was philosophical, studious, and absolutely charming. He often trails off into deep patterns of thought, which is quite interesting, and, honestly, kind of fun. Suffice to say, I loved him. (But you really can’t help but love all the boys.) Then what are you shamming for, and frightening us in this way?” said Peterkin, smiling through his tears; for the poor boy had been really under the impression that I was dying. a b c d Dutheil, Martine Hennard (2001), "The Representation of the Cannibal in Ballantyne's The Coral Island: Colonial Anxieties in Victorian Popular Fiction", College Literature, 28 (1): 105–122, JSTOR 25112562 Lion Fish– An imposing fish with beautiful stripes and an imperial presence in the ocean, the lion fish is fun to watch swimming below the surface of the water.

We listened for a long time for the sound again; but as it did not come, we returned to the bower and resumed our work. Chapter Nine. Prepare for a journey round the island—Sagacious reflections—Mysterious appearances and startling occurrences. In a few minutes we were all three pushing through the underwood of the forest, headed by Peterkin.

CHAPTER XXVIII.

In the early 20th century, the novel was considered a classic for primary school children in the UK, and in the United States it was a staple of high-school suggested reading lists. Modern critics consider the book's worldview to be dated and imperialist, but although less popular today, The Coral Island was adapted into a four-part children's television drama broadcast by ITV in 2000.

Another add to this wonderful book is the Gospel message that R.M. Ballantyne skillfully wove throughout the novel and the character’s lives (Ralph’s in particular). It also boasts many unfortunate references to "savages" and the boys' "horror" at their customs, which increase in frequency as the novel goes on. And suppose I were to write the account in a letter instead of telling you in words, would that be less useful?”a b Cox, Michael; Riches, Christopher (2012), "Ballantyne, R. M. [Robert Michael Ballantyne] (1825–1894) Scottish novelist", A Dictionary of Writers and their Works (onlineed.), Oxford University Press, doi: 10.1093/acref/9780199585052.001.0001, ISBN 9780199585052 So there are!” cried Peterkin, who, being of a very unobservant nature, had been too much taken up with other things to notice anything so high above his head as the fruit of a palm-tree. But whatever faults my young comrade had, he could not be blamed for want of activity or animal spirits. Indeed, the nuts had scarcely been pointed out to him when he bounded up the tall stem of the tree like a squirrel, and in a few minutes returned with three nuts, each as large as a man’s fist. Then why don’t you do it?” interrupted Peterkin. “Why have you kept us in the dark so long, you vile philosopher?” Well, suppose I were to print it and send it to you in the form of a book, would it not be as good and useful as ever?” Not ready for your Coral Island adventure to end? Coral Island Resort is an expansive property and is actually the only lodging option on the island.
