The base of early versions of the casting reads McLaren F 1 GTR. Despite the name, this casting actually depicts a McLaren F1 LM as it features the two side seats not present on the GTR racing models. The casting lost its plastic wing when it entered the mainline for the first time in 2017; the plastic wing reappeared in 2018 when it was used in the Gran Turismo series as well as the Gulf Car Culture series due the fact the original casting tool still exists in the Thailand factory.

For reasons that are still unclear (though a deal with Matchbox has been recently uncovered), DMC decided against allowing Mattel to manufacture the die-cast version of the car. To recoup the costs associated with the design and tooling, Bob convinced Mattel to modify the existing tooling to alter the appearance of the car just enough that it wasn't exactly a DeLorean any more. The Porsche 962 was a highly successful endurance prototype sports car designed by Norbert Singer. Introduced in 1984 as an evolution of the previous 956, the 962 complied with both GTP and Group C regulations. Powered by a 2.6L Type 935/76 flat-6 with one or two Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch turbochargers, the 962s were highly competitive in whatever races they entered, usually taking the win or at least a podium position. The 962s were so competitive that they were still winning races ten years after it was introduced, at which point numerous other cars had long obsoleted them; Team Taisan had the honors of taking the last ever competitive victory in a 962 in the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (now known as Super GT) in 1994. 91 chassis were produced in-house by Porsche, with additional being produced by other privateers such as Joest or Kremer. At least they look better than the standard, mainline wheels, and the base is made out of metal. And it's good to see that this new series also has a hidden Chase model to look for. And, at the end of the day, you can always choose to skip buying a new set from Mattel, as there's a good chance that something more interesting will pop up in no time.
