Why did the Holy Spirit preserve this text? What’s obviously going on here in this text? What’s obviously going on in this text is that Jesus’ love for us is very personal! He wants a relationship with us. He wants us to experience the same kind of love that he experiences. So here’s the Big Idea for the day: Jesus wants a relationship with you that mirrors His relationship with the Father. Jesus actually wants to have a relationship with you, and he wants to have it in such a way that it mirrors his relationship with the Father. Everything that Jesus is doing with you, with us, is to bring us into the same kind of right relationship with him that he has with his own Father. While Christianity is on the decline; anxiety, depression and loneliness are on the increase. As people turn away from God what replaces the hole left from faith? Who is there to guide us? And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love. (Romans 5:5) Then verse 15, the last half. For everything that I have learned from my father I have made known to you. So his love produces in us joy, friendship with God, and then knowledge. He tells us everything that he learned from his father. Now you, if you don’t know how much Jesus loves you, you can read the Bible and it reads one way. But when you actually have experienced the love of Christ, when you actually have the grandchild instead of just having heard about how great the grandchild is, when you actually possess the grandchild, when you actually possess this love, then suddenly these words come to life! They’re powerful! They’re real, they’re tangible! It’s not like watching it on TV anymore, it’s like being there! To summarize, I did not like Jesus Loves You, by Christine Topjian. I think it propagates a false gospel and I do not recommend it.

This may happen when you’re praying, studying the Bible, or meditating on Scripture, and thoughts come to mind that seem beyond your capacity to produce them yourself. You have probably been hurt or betrayed by someone you love at some point in your life. Maybe you have experienced this more than once. Loving and trusting other people is risky. Once one person hurts you, it becomes harder to open up to others. Life is full of sorrow. Jesus came to give us hope. His message is that this place is not our home and we don’t belong here. In our sorrow we all long for a better place and by drawing closer to God, our sorrow will become less intense.A friend of mine once wrote a blog post about what is - in her opinion - the “hardest thing” that can happen to a Believer in Christ. That thing is that he or she wastes their whole life full of gifts, talents and potential and only realizes it when it’s too late. They waste it by pursuing earthly accomplishments and successes. I fear that may have been the story of the man in this book. A sad 1/5 stars for Jesus Loves You, by Christine Topjian. According to the Goodreads star system, that means I “did not like it.” Unfortunately for the author and anyone else who has put time and effort into creating this book, that would be an accurate assessment. I’m still not sure if it is meant for children or adults. Washing someone’s dirty feet may seem like a gross enough task today, but during that day, people wore sandals and walked most places. So their feet were much, much dirtier. Washing feet was usually the job of a lowly servant.

Yablo, S. (2006). Non-catastrophic presupposition failure. In J. J. Thomson & A. Byrne (Eds.), Content and modality (pp. 164–190). Oxford: Clarendon Press. Even when things seem hopeless, you can still hope in God. God does not promise He will fix our problems in the immediate sense. We will experience pain and suffering and sorrow. But He does promise that one day, everyone who has a relationship with Him will spend eternity in His presence, where suffering and sorrow will be gone forever. The [visible] heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, “You are My Son, My Beloved! In You I am well pleased and find delight!”—Luke 3:21-22 (Amp.) Davis, W. (2013). Dyadic contextualism and content relativism. Intercultural Pragmatics, 10(1), 1–39. Jesus is our only way to Heaven and he has prepared a special place for us. He wants us to experience His unconditional love. He desires for all of us to humbly come to Him and surrender our lives. A word of caution here: If you’re in need and yet to have your needs met, it doesn’t mean God doesn’t love you.

Remember the Big Idea? He wants this relationship with us to mirror his relationship with his Father. He’s saying in the same way I have obeyed my Father and remained in his love, then I want you to obey the commands so that you can remain in my love. Verse 11: This passage begins by telling us Jesus knew He had all of God’s authority and power and would soon return to God in heaven. But He showed His disciples He loved them by stepping down from His position of power to take on the role of a lowly servant. Quite astonishing! Please read it again. Because that statement has the power to rewire your emotional chemistry (forever). Jesus affirms to love you as the Father loves Him. In the same way, with the same intensity and passion, and the same fiery emotions the Father has for Him. No matter how much you have messed up or how far you feel from God, He still loves you and wants a relationship with you.

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. The cover and illustrations seem like a child’s book but some of the scenarios that Jesus helps us through were above the understanding of a child (for example: asking someone on a date, getting that first job). After reading through the book a few times I can see it would be perfect for adults new to Christian teachings or troubled adolescents that have turned away from Jesus and need support and reassurance to reconnect with their faith. Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, Your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O LORD. How precious is Your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of Your wings. Have in mind that Jesus gave that “love” announcement to the disciples (during last supper night). And they were far from perfect. Peter would deny Jesus three times (sealing the denial with a couple of curse words) and the rest of the disciples would run away God loves His children as a proud Father. If you have begun a relationship with Him, you are God’s child and He delights in you. Just imagine the joy of our heavenly Father when one day he’s able to gather all of us together again. I wonder if he’s going to cry? You know how happy he’s going to be. The Big Idea here today is this: Jesus wants a relationship with you that mirrors His relationship with the Father. And the joy of that friendship is supposed to be yours by abiding in Christ. Some of you are coming to the Bible Study and you’re not quite sure about whether to embrace this Jesus, this love of Christ. So you come to the Bible Study to learn, but maybe today is the day you realize that you need to make this personal, that you need to become the Christian, not just be a Christian in waiting. Kind of like the grandparents to be, as it were. It’s time to go ahead and give this faith birth, to really release yourself to this loving Christ who wants to remain and abide in you, so you can abide in him. We’re going to close now with a prayer, and I’m going to offer a prayer. If you are among those men, whether here or online, who have not yet received Jesus Christ into your life, I’m going to give you an opportunity to do that. So let’s close in prayer.
