About this deal

The rounded handle top is rubber coated, so using the palms to push or lean on the handles is comfortable and safe. Many veteran hill-users won’t be seen without their poles. After a lifetime of knee abuse from ascending and descending countless mountain paths, they become a valuable bit of equipment, particularly on those paths that have consistently large drops between each step. The pole is suited to a variety of weather conditions with the foam grips performing well in both warm and cold weather and with included snow baskets, the pole can be used in light snow.

The handles, called Aergon Thermo Long Grip by Leki, are super comfortable to use. I find cork handles, which are ubiquitous on a lot of brands these days, quite irritating and abrasive over time. The foam construction on the Vario Carbon allows use without gloves and the long section with added grips means you can vary the pole height instinctively depending on your body position, without the need to stop and adjust the length. They have a good range of adjustment from 110cm to 130cm, and are very easy to assemble and fold away. They also feature extended grips, which makes it easy to choke down on a sharp ascent without having to change the pole length. The rounded top handle also nestles nicely into the palm if using the poles for braking and balance on steep downhill trails.Although, like all carbon poles, careful placement is still necessary, because sudden impacts are more likely to shatter carbon fibre compared to aluminium alloy. The upside is vastly reduced weight, which reduces fatigue, particularly when covering longer mileages.

Nordic walking poles: Poles designed specifically for Nordic walking tend to be fixed-length without folding mechanisms, and combine extreme lightness with super-strength to support your weight. Specialist walking pole maker Leki has a great guide to selecting the length of your Nordic walking pole. These poles also feature extended grips, with a lower secondary foam rubber section that makes it easy to choke down on a sharp ascent, without having to change the pole length. The rounded Aergon handle has been ergonomically engineered to nestle nicely in the palm. The straps are simple fabric strips, which adjust easily. Conclusion

The best walking poles you can buy in 2023

On the plus side, the Aergon grips were comfortable to handle and were reasonably lightweight. Leki also extended the material down the shaft a bit to give you hand placement options if you’re on undulating terrain and don’t want to necessarily adjust pole length. Versatility (9 out of 10) Other important design features to consider are the hand grips. Most are made from foam, cork or rubber. Look for ergonomic grips that feel comfortable in the hand, with a good strap or sling. The Leki Micro Vario Carbon is one of the few poles to feature foam grips, as opposed to the tried and tested cork. We found the foam to be very comfortable and great to use, with the grips easily moulding to your hand shape after use. Leki also include an extended portion of foam below the grip for situations when you need to grip down the shaft or utilise a shorter pole. Selected for our Outdoor 100 2021/22. Read our full review of the Leki MCT 12 Vario Carbon trekking poles. BUY NOW: LEKI.CO.UK The ‘Skin’ strap is very forgiving and slides on the wrist without much friction. Being wide these offer support if you like to be tied to the pole, although personally I don’t.

Adjustable length: Size really matters. You should be able to hold your elbow at a 90-degree angle when holding the pole by its hand grip. Either make sure you choose the right length for your height (specialist retailer Alpinetrek has an interactive guide to help you) or buy a fully adjustable pole. Not only can you adjust it to suit your height, but also for different needs – for example, downhill stretches need a longer pole than uphill treks. Leki make some of the best trekking poles in the business. They’ve been leaders in the market since 1970 and now make dedicated poles for all manner of outdoor sports, from skiing and trekking to trail running and Nordic walking. The use of carbon and aluminiumoffers that perfect balance between strength and weight, these pole are ideal for use while carrying heavy loads or can even be used for skiing. The ergonomically-shaped handle features a basic, but still comfortable foam, and there’s a smooth webbing strap. There’s not too much to shout about in this department to be honest. These are technologically advanced poles that would be better suited to walkers who already understand the benefits of trekking poles and are accustomed to using them, particularly those seeking to minimise trail weight by upgrading from aluminium alloy poles to carbon fibre construction. Part of Leki’s specialist trekking range, the Micro Vario Carbon is suitable for particularly demanding tours.

If you’re planning on taking these poles over a long distance, you’ll certainly appreciate that lower gram count.”
