About this deal

Written by Paul Webster, this book provides fabulous accounts of routes on all 282 Munros in Scotland. It contains detailed maps and route descriptions – just what you need for your Munro adventure. If you’ve decided you want to have a go yourself you’ve got two options, which are to set off under your own steam at your own pace or join a mountain climbing group.

The Munros were first listed by Sir Hugh Munro (1856 - 1919) in his 'Munros Tables', published in the Journal of the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) in 1891. Sir Hugh divided the summits into 283 seperate mountains (now known as the Munros), whilst 255 further summits over 3000 feet were considered to be only subsidiary 'Tops'. His list caused quite a stir at the time, as it had previously been thought that there were only around 30 mountains of that height. From Loch Earn, follow the A85 to the village of Comrie and take the minor Monument Road for 5 miles till you get to the Ben Chonzie car park. There’s only space for perhaps 5 vehicles so I suggest getting there early as parking on the narrow verge is difficult. One aspect you'll see if you opt for this long route is a hike aside a huge, hidden waterfall cascading into a dark chasm on the south side of An Teallach. This is a very popular mountain with exceptionally easy terrain and a straightforward trail. However, the best thing about Buachaille Etive Beag is that it has two summits, allowing trekkers to bag two Munros in a single day. The Lawers Range Sir Hugh never managed to complete the ascent of all the summits on his list, and it was left to the Revd A E Robertson to complete the first round of the Munros in 1901. Since then, attempting to ascend all the peaks ('Munro-bagging') has become a popular pursuit among British walkers and mountaineers. The mountain is located in Perth and Kinross 10 miles northwest of Aberfeldy, not far from the lochs of Tay, Rannoch, and Tummel. Fortunately, learning basic navigation has never been so easy – there are numerous resources out there, from massive books to YouTube videos. And don’t forget to try out everything you learn from these resources – theory and practice and two completely different things. Fitness Level The height of Munros in Scotland are mountains 3,000 ft(914.4m) or over. HOW MANY MUNROS ARE THERE IN SCOTLAND?

The mountains in Scotland over 3,000 feet (914.4 metres) in height are called the Munros. Named after Hugh Munro, the first person to compile a list of them in 1891, there were were originally 283 Munros. Despite holding the status of the 10th highest mountain in Scotland, this Munro is actually quite easy to bag and is therefore very popular with Munro baggers. On the way to the top, you will bump into Beinn Ghlas, which is the second summit in this range and one that people rarely climb in its own right. Beinn na LapThis Munro in Perthshire is considered one of the easiest to climb and it’s often chosen as the first ascent for beginner Munro-baggers. In fact, the hardest part might be finding the start of the walk. Munro published his findings in the Scottish Mountaineering Club journal in 1891 with a set of tables that detailed 538 summits over 3,000 feet. Of these, 282 were classified as separate mountains, and it’s these that we refer to today as ‘Munros’. Munros are officially defined as mountains more than 3000ft (914m) in height, but gargantuan summits such as Ben Macdui, Braeriach and Cairn Toul in the Cairngorms area cross the 4265ft (1300m) mark. Of course, altitude isn’t the only challenge for hikers; you also need to factor in the rough Highlands terrain and inclement weather. Choose peaks according to your hiking ability and equip yourself for extreme weather and you can enjoy Munro routes in safety, from relatively easy hill walks to hardcore mountaineering ascents. How many Munros are there? First-aid kit: Ensure it includes items such as bandages, plasters, pain relief, and blister prevention. Scottish Mountaineering Club: This is one of the most respected clubs for climbing in Scotland. The SMC has been operating for over 100 years and they have a wealth of information about Munros as well as hosting a number of club meets and events. Members can even book one of their huts which are strategically positioned close to mountain ranges.
