About this deal

Based on our evaluation of using AMD's Ryzen 5 5600X CPU for gaming, you can expect good game performance with a high-performance CPU cooler. It's worth noting that this is a gaming focused CPU. We're sure there will be some productivity workloads that can benefit from the extra L3 cache, but AMD has refrained from giving any examples if they exist. Instead, AMD is 100% pushing this as a gaming CPU, and once you see the data it will make sense why there isn't a "5950X3D."

The 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector is the standard PCIe 5.0 connector, providing up to 600 watts of power, and this power connector is being used to power Nvidia’s RTX 4080, 4090, and 4090 Ti. But the most thrilling prospect that comes with PCIe Gen 5 is the SSDs that will be able to utilize the massive bandwidth it provides. Samsung became the first to announce PCIe 5.0 SSDs, with its upcoming PM1743 with reading speeds up to 13000 MB/s. Gigabyte also followed suit recently. (Read: GIGABYTE Announces AORUS 10000 PCIe 5.0 SSD With 10GB/s Read Speed) WiFi 6E There was basically no performance difference between the DDR4 memory kits with the 12600K while DDR5 was 7% faster. Then we see that performance is much the same with the 5800X3D while the faster DDR4 memory boosted performance using the 5600X by an 8% margin. The idle temperatures provide similar results, which is not surprising. But a major concern for the 7700X appears when both the CPUs are put under load, the Ryzen 7 7700X sees the temperatures jumping to 95 degrees centigrade. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is cooled just adequately by the Corsair iCue H115i, but there’s clearly a problem here for the 7700X in the fact that the 280mm AIO isn’t enough to keep it cool under load. Power Draw Power Draw Under Load In our Blender render test, the Ryzen 7 7700X takes another huge lead, finishing the render almost 4 minutes earlier. Corona 1.3 Corona 1.3Update: In the meantime, I replaced this Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RTX 3090 rig with the new-gen hardware, with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4090, plus a new motherboard and DDR5 memory.

So this benchmarking graph from AMD shows, on average, a 13% improvement in performance over Zen 3, with 8 Cores and 16 Threads, at a fixed 4.0 GHz frequency. The performance improvement goes up to +39% for the wPrime test. Zen 4 IPC improvement and contributors (Image Courtesy: AMD) Normally we'd recommend the Ryzen 5 5600 as a smart Zen 3 upgrade, but as we've found for 3600 owners, it's not a huge step forward and in many instances the performance uplift is going to be fairly negligible. After all, it was only 17% faster on average at 1080p using a Radeon RX 6950 XT whereas the 5800X3D was 46% faster. There does appear to be a bug with Radeon drivers as they were unable to detect the availability of SAM on 300-series boards, instead reporting that the feature was unavailable. However, it was possible to enable it at the BIOS level and the expected performance uplift was achieved nonetheless, so it is working despite what the Radeon Adrenaline drivers are reporting. We also saw over 70% performance gains in seven of the 23 games tested with most games showing over a 50% uplift, hence the 51% gain on average. Error correction code (ECC) memory is a more expensive form of memory typically used for critical server and workstation use cases. The purpose of ECC memory is to detect and correct when a single bit in memory gets flipped unintentionally. Next we have Hitman 3 and in this game at 1080p we see that the 7600X is 10% faster using the higher frequency DDR5 memory. Then with the 13600K we only saw a 2.5% increase from CL16 to CL14, while DDR5 increased performance over CL14 DDR4 by 8%. In the meantime, we're extremely impressed with what we've seen here, and we simply hope AMD can meet demand. If the 5800X3D turns into another Ryzen 3 3300X situation, gamers won't be happy.
