Meanwhile, Nessa and Smithy showed us the less glossy alternative: one night stand with someone you don’t even claim to like, awkwardly trying to avoid each other, unplanned pregnancy.
In Series 1, Smithy thinks that Gavin should not get his hopes up when they are going to meet Stacey, and believes that she might not turn up. And despite the fact that he did not want to go with Gavin, he rather enjoys himself when he is there. He and Nessa have the first of four One Night Stands, which occurred in the en-suite of the hotel room, and involved a toilet brush. Stacey's mum Gwen is a cheerful character who loves her daughter and is known for making omelets! Introduced as Smithy’s new girlfriend in the 2019 Christmas special, no one’s supposed to like Sonia anyway. But I don’t think she even succeeds on that level… She’s just pointless. This special should have just had Smithy and Nessa together, or at least both single and they get together over the course of the special. Sonia enters the game too late. Flop. He is the only person, other than Bryn and Jason, who knows what happened on the fishing trip, after Bryn told him to get the matter off his chest. His relationship with Nessa results in both Bryn and Jason being incredibly nervous about him telling their friends what happened, although he makes it very clear to Bryn he wouldn't tell anyone about it. He also has his own company named Dave's Coaches. He often shows jealousy towards Smithy for being the father of Nessa's child. Smithy gets jealous of him for always spending time with his son and treating him like his own. In the final episode he leaves Nessa at the altar as he doesn't believe she loves him. Nessa's father mentions him having "blood on his hands", but says he was joking, knowing that "nothing was proven". Dave often has a strained relationship with the other characters, and has publicly had angry exchanges with Bryn, Smithy and Pete, who punched Dave in the face after he made an uncharitable remark about his wife, Dawn. When Dave becomes engaged to Nessa, Smithy thinks that it is a bad idea as he thinks that Dave shouldn't act as Baby Neil's father. He tells Nessa not to marry him, she cannot understand why as it is her business, and not for Smithy to get involved in despite the fact that she can tell it is about Baby Neil.
