About this deal

The intensity grows with each possible lead. Is there a serial murderer at large or is this someone hiding in plain sight as sane as you or me? I adapted it for radio and it was produced for BBC Radio Scotland by Stewart Conn, reaturing Maev Alexander, Fidelis Morgan, Amanda Hillwood, Vivienne Dixon and Vari Sylvester. 90mins. Of all the adaptations that Val has seen of her work, the most prominent has to be Wire in the Blood. Broadcast between 2002 and 2008 on the ITV network, the show followed Doctor Anthony Hill, a psychologist played by Robson Green who had the uncanny ability to see into the minds of killers. At the end of Insidious Intent I could not see a way forward for this series. Not in the original sense of how it use to be. Tony and Carol at the end of everything they worked so hard to be. But I had great faith in Val after that last sentence. I saw that she had a plan, or at least I told myself she must have a plan. Okay, I was hoping and wishing and could not deal with the fact that all of it could be over… In the 2017 novel Insidious Intent [2] Dr Hill is imprisoned for murder, having stabbed serial killer Tom Elliot to prevent Carol Jordan from doing so.

If this is the final installment in his entertaining series it was a great way to wrap everything up. This has been an interesting, entertaining series. I love how the characters have grown and matured, and how Carol and Tony still relate to each other since book 1 in 1995 or thereabouts. It's hard to say ,... but I was a bit disappointed with this one. There are multiple story lines, with baffling mysteries to solve. Parts of it felt somewhat disjointed. The ending was unsatisfactory ... although it does nicely set up the next book. The introduction is slow and steady, as characters are introduced and the scene is framed; having read McDermid’s The Mermaids Singing, I knew that she was setting me up for an addicting undertaking. Once I got into the corpus delecti of the dual plots, I was hooked.

If You Like Tony Hill/Carol Jordan Books, You’ll Love…

I am very psyched to have finally started reading her books featuring psychologist Tony Hill and homicide detective Carol Jordan. I’m not a big PBS watcher so i was unaware it had been adapted into a popular television series. (I didn’t know that another of my favorites, the DCI Alan Banks series by Peter Robinson has also previously appeared on TV, presumably imported from the BBC.) I am delighted that there are at least 8 more books (and counting) in this series for me. I have discovered some great old gems this year (including books by Tana French, Stuart MacBride, and Elizabeth George) and am eager to find even more, especially as I observe the current generation of writers trending too much toward me-too territory. Val believes that Hill and Jordan’s ability to recover from their demons is what makes them so compelling. Tony Hill & Carol Jordan Awards When Tony Hill and Carol Jordan are introduced in The Mermaids Singing, they are lone wolves. A killer is on the loose, one that takes pride in perpetrating gay-related murders.

She is approached by an old sparring partner, solicitor Bronwen Scott, who is part of a team looking to restore justice to prison inmates who have a decent case to claim that they have been wrongly convicted. Bronwen wants Carol to use her investigative skills and experience as part of that team, initially to look into the case of a gay man, Saul Nelson, who has been convicted of the murder of a young rent boy, with a view to preparing a case for the Criminal Case Review Commission. Then, the following excerpt from Tony's work with his patients is reminiscent of my research on narrative therapy and resonated with me: "Sometimes I could help them rewrite the script. To give themselves a different future." Taking Carol’s place at ReMIT is an unpleasant, ambitious man who is not earning the respect of his staff.
