About this deal

The butter in this recipe is just used to brown the onions, and that small amount is allowed in pressure canning recipes. If you need more fat for browning, try adding a neutral oil or olive oil. French Onion Soup uses a few humble, inexpensive ingredients that have savory, filling character. The result is a richly flavored soup. This is a country meal and the ingredients you source should be from whatever you have on hand. For example:

Process pints or quarts in a pressure canner for 40 minutes. At altitudes of 0 to 2,000 feet, process jars at 11 pounds pressure in a dial gauge canner; in a weighted gauge canner, process jars at 10 pounds pressure at altitudes of 0 to 1,000 feet and at 15 pounds pressure for altitudes above 1,000 feet.” As you can see, the onions that I canned browned considerably in the canner as the sugars in their tissues caramelized. I was actually pretty pleased by this because I hoped to be able to use them as a french onion soup base later and caramelization is ideal. Thyme: This herb has a subtle, earthy flavor that complements the caramelized onions perfectly. Add a few sprigs or about 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme to the soup. Also, be sure to allow time to simmer fully it really adds great flavor to this low sodium soup recipe! It lets the savory spices and bay leaf do its work to impart great flavor which we need because of the low sodium. It’s about making my creations over and over again to make them taste just right! And just like our wellness journey-it takespractice-learning portion control, finding WW friendly recipes to make, substitutingprocessed and highcalorie foods for lean proteins, fruits andvegetables, measuring and weighing our food-it can also be very daunting, challenging and frustrating, yet the results are so rewarding. And as wecontinue these practices-we begin to form healthierhabits that can last a lifetime.French onion soup is one of my favorite comfort food meals, and I absolutely love the savory flavor of the slow-cooked carmelize onions combined with crunchy bread and bubbly melted cheese. But even while purchasing it from outside, some things are to be kept in mind to have a product that is, in every aspect, the one you asked for. These things are as follows. Number of Servings Put the counterweight or weighted gauge on the vent, then bring the pressure to 10 lbs for a weighted gauge canner or 11 lbs for a dial-gauge canner. (Adjust canning weight for altitude, see notes) Remember to give the herbs time to infuse their flavors into the soup by adding them during the cooking process. However, low cost doesn’t have to mean low quality. You get excellent options that don’t cost you a fortune! And, where you save even more money is if you buy in bulk.

Turmeric: A little turmeric powder can not only provide a subtle, peppery flavor but also a beautiful golden hue to your soup. Uncover the pot and cook at a higher heat until the onion is caramelized. Add the rest of the white wine, then cook for an additional two minutes. Make sure you loosen any browned bits from the bottom of the Dutch oven. This would work as a suitable substitute in recipes using condensed French Onion Soup. For extra flavor and to make it more like French Onion Soup use beef broth instead of water. How do you make onion soup mix from scratch? To give your soup a flavor boost, consider adding a splash of wine or sherry, fresh thyme, or a bay leaf. Edited to add: I’ve made another batch of this soup, and I did substitute dry vermouth for the white wine, and I definitely like it better with the vermouth. I think it has a smoother taste than the white white. Give it a try – you won’t be disappointed.

It does take a fair amount of time to make but there is really very little hands on time involved. Most of the time is spent rendering the moisture out of the onions and then letting all the ingredients to meld together in a simmer. cups of sliced onion. Slice onions according to your preference. Some people enjoy the long onion rings, while others prefer to dice the onions so they fit neatly in a spoon. After this simmer time, the soup is “done,” and you can taste it and adjust seasonings to taste before canning. This dish can be enjoyed on its own without anything else added. How do you make canned French onion soup?
