About this deal

These are watch faces made by third-party developers and the in-house Garmin folks, too, with the collection growing all the time. Now Garmin doesn’t ever show lux levels in the solar widgets. Instead, they show a relative intensity in terms of solar power. On a pure sunny day here in July in the Netherlands, I easily can get the full sun widget to illuminate. But, I can also do that too even on a high light overcast day (meaning, a super high thin cloud layer). Even with a handful of clouds meandering around. This next section I ran twice, so it looks a bit crowded, but it’s good to see how similar each unit was since I ran in the same spot each time. You see the Casio and FR935 are more variable, whereas the Fenix 6 Pro Solar, Polar Grit X, and Instinct Solar tended to be less variable. This weather-centric face looks great on the Fenix series and the Garmin Enduro, pulling in current conditions from openweather.org.

It's available in four cosmic-themed colors that, along with swapping numbers for watch hands, will also elegantly display the date and battery life status. It keeps things simple, but that's quite alright with us. It's worth noting that the Fenix 6 Pro and Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire models have 32GB storage, with the standard Fenix 7 and 7 Solar offering 16GB. For the more basic standard Fenix 6, there's only 64MB of storage. There’s currently surf watches in the market already, so clearly there’s demand there. From Garmin’s perspective it’s relatively trivial to take an existing piece of hardware and add a few extra metrics. Whereas the lift for a new company to create a new smartwatch in 2020 is almost impossibly hard to get enough demand to make it work. Garmin has a long-standing reputation for longevity in its watches. Not only do the watches last seemingly forever, but Garmin continues to upgrade them well past their release. I expect the Fenix 6S Pro to last at least three to four years under normal usage. You’ll likely want to upgrade to a flashy new watch before the Fenix 6S Pro fails. Should you buy it? It's also worth bearing in mind that many retailers are now offering Fenix 6 watches at a substantial discount, so if price is your biggest concern then this might be your best option.

I love that it doesn’t look overwhelming on my wrist, but it’s still big enough to read. My only issue is that the band is somewhat tough to size, with one notch feeling a little tight and the next slightly loose. Navigation Along with a boat that slowly moves across your face, you can see your step count along with the time, battery status, and whether you've got a Bluetooth connection to your paired smartphone.

The rainbow effect does its very best to bring some life to a display that can feel a little less vibrant when compared to an Apple or Samsung smartwatch display. So, if you can't stomach the price of Garmin's ultrarunner-friendly Enduro, you can still get one of its best faces. While I was skeptical about the need for a touchscreen on a running watch, I’ve been really impressed by the Fenix 7 — the touchscreen undoubtedly makes the watch easier to use when you’re not on the run. Another huge design improvement on the Fenix 7 is that you can tweak the settings, data screens, and set-up of the watch from your phone — something that has been missing for years. It's always a bit annoying when you see a watch face crop up on another Garmin and you scroll through to find out you don't have it in yours. Then, I got to the beach area. Along the waterfront there are actually tall apartment/hotel buildings that I came relatively close too. But there was no meaningful impact to GPS accuracy on any of the units:

It seemed to correctly capture my sleep and wake times, but the stages seemed inaccurate — if the watch is to be believed, I only spend about 15–30 minutes in deep sleep each night. When I woke up, I opened the app to get an in-depth view of my night. While the watch seems to upload activity data to the app super fast, it took forever — read: about 5 minutes — to be able to view my sleep each morning. There is a widget version, too, but, if your Garmin doesn't support widgets and does let you add watch faces, this is a useful one to have for your morning weekend runouts. There's also a more simplified version available, too, letting you ditch those additional stats to show off time, date, and heart rate only if things get a bit too busy for you. GPS accuracy can be looked at in a number of different ways, but I prefer to look at it using a number of devices in real-world scenarios across a vast number of activities. I use 2-6 other devices at once, trying to get a clear picture of how a given set of devices handles conditions on a certain day. Conditions include everything from tree/building cover to weather.

When Garmin launches a new watch, it's often the case that it reserves some new faces for those watches only. Thankfully, Connect IQ developers get on the case recreating them for other watches in its collection. While the Sapphire edition is supposed to have added scratch resistance, I can’t imagine needing it. I’d recommend skipping the upgrade and saving some cash for any accessories you might want. Colors, bands, and size I liked that I didn’t have to do anything special to enable sleep mode — the sensors automatically figure out when you fall asleep and wake up, as well as when you’re in light sleep, deep sleep, and rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep.

Connect a pair of Bluetooth headphones, and you’ll be all set to listen to music during your activity without having to bring your phone along. When you start your run, the watch will give you a suggested workout (time and speed), based on how it thinks you’re doing with your training load for the week. In any case, I just don’t see any meaningful difference between the Solar variant of the Fenix 6 Pro and the non-Solar variant. Which is to say that, for most people in most situations, GPS accuracy will be just fine. Like with other watches, you’ll still see variations. Given all Garmin/Suunto/Polar/COROS units are using the same GPS chipset series from Sony, the accuracy tends to be pretty similar. Wrap-Up: There are also Otron 2.0 and 3.0 faces that tinker with that look, but we'd say this is our favorite of the three. Once ready to climb it’ll show you the problem difficulty at the top, the time, and your heart rate:
