About this deal

Brilliant news and as soon as I saw the new label name, I was nodding in admiration, being a true crime buff and having read about the Wallace case in great depth over the years.

If NB57 does go for Haverhill it has to come with a “Pioneers In Town Expansion” quote, I would Assuming that Manchester happens and that CDs will be available, I would hope that a fair few people on here who want to get the maximum dosh to the band will be asking other people going to the gig to get them off the stall for them. The Humdrum Express supported HMHB in Leamington Spa earlier this year. We saw them playing in Studentland in Leeds at the end of September. This was the full band playing (although the lifesize cut-out of Sally Gunnell was missing). Ian introduced the bassist (“Bernard Bresslaw’s nephew”) who had won a Take A Break competition, with the prize of a round of crazy golf with Brendan Ormsby, and a year’s supply of tinned asparagus. All grand stuff, and I hope that we can get to hear some of these songs at a HMHB evening soonish. There was even an Undertones cover thrown in for good measure. Thanks to Ian for the set list which included some stuff which was new to us. Another album out next year?Andy went on his way to the Railway, and we went on our way to the Llangollen Oggie Shop. Lamb and mint for us. Later on Postman Tony saw me as I walked past The Bull where he was taking ale. He dashed out and we had the usual chat about this, that and the other. Like Andy, he was spending a couple of days in town. We also said Hello to Peter who was stopping in the same digs as us, being The Hand Hotel.

I’ve only ever bought CDs from Geoff or the merch stall so I guess now it’s just the merch stall*, and that will be the only way, for now, to ensure that the band get the maximum proportion of the dosh (assuming that RM Qualtrough records can’t be arsed/don’t want that image for their band to actually set up an online shop). Karl was wearing an Inner City Unit Acid Punk t-shirt. (Some Hawkwind off-shoot, according to Andrew). Everyone else in the band was wearing plain tops. Nigel said that they had been to the Charles Darwen museum in Shrewsbury. A maximum of ten people were allowed in. There were eight people in the queue, so the band just barged in at the front, thereby proving Darwen’s theory of natural selection. Unfortunately the band will never, ever tour overseas whatever the offer. A better option might be to do what the Irish have done and get your own HMHB tribute band”

Gig News & Reviews

I own one and have been known to talk of the beautiful game, although I draw the line at bottled lager. Another “by the way” is that in Roger mentions that NB mentioned that the Birkonian baker on the Titanic had also survived the SS Oregon sinking 26 years earlier. But NB didn’t mention that did he? He mentioned the Lusitania. There was one fella who survived both the Titanic and the Lusitania. But it wasn’t the baker. Did I miss two separate individuals getting mentioned (perhaps in a to-and-fro with Tony the Wizard?), or did NB get the two mixed up? Anyway my favourite moment in the whole Titanic anniversary interlude was that NB said something like “anyway she hits the iceberg in about twenty minutes from now. Sorry if that’s a spoiler for anyone.” The Hitchers set went exactly as per the listing from Niall. Nice touch from him after the first song where he expressed commiseration at Geoff’s death. Before hearing them, I had not really known what to expect. This is meaty stuff. These are coveted support slots, with a few bands in the queue, but I could cope with seeing these again. Well in fact we were doing just that the day after this show. The Hitchers were heading north to a gig in Leeds. Report to follow next time. Another band meeting was taking place outside the venue, at which Neil let us know that he’d passed the tunes for three new songs on to Nigel, and was just waiting for the words to be attached.

Nobody’s yet made that suggestion, @Paul F, though I should have done, as we’re only 8 miles from Scunny). Dr D: One small correction to your otherwise excellent review – my shirt actually said ‘Fantasy Biscuitball Runner-Up 2021/22’. I don’t have particularly high expectations of myself, but even I’d have been somewhat disappointed to finish runner-up in the 2020/21 season, as the competition hadn’t got off the ground at that point. I have considered procuring an updated shirt to also reflect last season’s achievements, but I’d need one at least a size bigger, and as my clothes tend to be falling off me at the moment I might have to get myself a bad tattoo instead. Anyhow, it was good of you to come over for a chat and to have the opportunity to say a proper hello. C.W: I defy you to be as attention-seeking as I was when I attracted the attention of a steward at Shrewsbury at the end of 2021. Please don’t make it your last HMHB gig. If you can both make Wolvo (or Holmfirth or Newcastle) there’s a drink in it from me. Walk good. Thanks Chris, I’m not sure why I didn’t spot that before. Probably goes without saying, but ignore any weird requests you got from me to enable editing on the spreadsheet. Third time hearing Oblong live and first time I didn’t sob like a babba at the end. Might be all cried out with the week I’ve had.

The A to Z of HMHB

Excellent stuff. Have to admit that the case of Stutty Northam isn’t one I knew about, so something to look into there, thanks! It looks like the band are not only illegally parked, but have assumed that the narrow path belongs to them. How about I just walk in the road? You stay as you are, and I’ll just walk in the road. Given that Stranraer, Kirkcudbright etc feature regularly in songs is it really that outlandish to daydream about a brief jaunt over to Belfast? Interesting to see that they covered “Swords” in the encore, because every time I’ve heard the chorus of Token Covid Song, I’ve expected it to end in the chorus of “Swords”. Failing that, why not bribe the musicians at your local folk club to learn a couple of HMHB numbers and inevitably some of them will fall in love with the band and keep learning more?
