Episodes included such well-known faces as Stratford Johns, Leon Cortez, Terence Alexander, Roger Delgado, William Franklyn, Michael Goodliffe, and Barry Foster, among others. [2] The new translation by David Watson is excellent. It is readable and true to the spirit of the original so that you forget that you are reading a translation which is exactly how it should be. (The sole infelicity, "Boissier returned with a dossier," did make me smile but also pointed out how very good it was overall.) Their window had been repaired (the burglar's usual way in) and the dentist's wife had left him, 2 nights ago, to return to Holland. They deny any odd happenings, and the window had broken in a storm, but Maigret finds the ironmonger, and discovers that a 2nd pane of glass had been bought. Could that have been to repair the burglar's breakage - and why hadn't it been reported?

Between 1931 and 1972, 75 novels [3] and 28 short stories [4] about Maigret were published, starting with Pietr-le-Letton (" The Strange Case of Peter the Lett") and concluding with Maigret et Monsieur Charles (" Maigret and Monsieur Charles"). With the creation of Maigret, Simenon renewed the detective novel genre. The novels and stories have been translated into more than 50 languages. [4] This is classic Maigret and though it's midway through the series, it's also perfectly fine as a place to start for those new to Simenon. This new Penguin translation feels smooth and natural, and keeps some of the low-key humour of the originals. In 2004, Sergio Castellitto played Maigret in two Italian TV movies: La trappola ("The Trap") and L'ombra cinese ("The Chinese Shadow"). You are the flesh and bones of Maigret!" Davies later remembered. "That was a wonderful beginning. Then he drove us to his lovely château in the village of Échandens, where I met his wife. Later he began to coach me in Maigret's idiosyncrasies." In 1950, Charles Laughton played the first English-language Maigret in The Man on the Eiffel Tower, [1] adapted from the 1931 novel A Battle of Nerves. The film co-starred Franchot Tone, Burgess Meredith, and Wilfrid Hyde-White. A visit from the tall, thin woman he arrested many years ago - now married to a hapless burglar - leads Maigret on a tortuous investigation in which he struggles with a formidable suspect.

The Italian actor Gino Cervi played the character on Italian television from 1964 up to 1972 in Le inchieste del commissario Maigret; Simenon himself considered Cervi's interpretation of the character to be "very good." [20] This series resulted in 14 novels and 2 short stories being adapted. Inspector Cadaver appeared as Maigret's Rival in a Penguin triple edition of 1985 along with The Night Club and Maigret in New York. This is the original translation by Helen Thomson, with an introduction by Paul Bailey. To start this review, I have to say that I, personally, enjoy reading detectives at summer. The thing is, I feel that vacation read requires to be both thrilling and not emotionally heavy. And “Maigret And The Tall Woman” turned out to be just the book of that kind – so I’m very thankful to Penguin Books for sending it to me. Maigret and the Burglar's Wife ( French: Maigret et la Grande Perche) is a 1951 detective novel by the Belgian writer Georges Simenon featuring his character Jules Maigret. [1] Maigret is spurred into action by a visit from a burglar's wife, whom he had known well many years before. She informs him that a few nights previously her husband had been in the act of burgling a house when he discovered a dead body on the floor. Horrified, he had fled the scene, and then left the country - writing to his wife by letter. Maigret is inclined to investigate a prominent dentist, who lives with his domineering mother, and has a wife who has apparently "gone away on holiday" - although Maigret knows he can prove nothing unless he can find the body. Quite simply, this is a pleasure. It's a fine translation of the work of a true master and very warmly recommended. Directing was similarly shared by sixteen directors, with Gerard Glaister and Terence Williams responsible for eight each, Andrew Osborn seven, and Eric Tayler six. [2] Actually, I was excited to read it as I’ve already been introduced to a few of Maigret detectives and all of them appeared to be full of plot twists and aperitif. And clearly, “Maigret And The Tall Woman” is no exception. The series was written by a set of ten writers, each contributing individual episodes; the most prolific being Giles Cooper, credited with nineteen episodes, and Roger East, with twelve. [2] Gerard Depardieu starred as Maigret in a 2022 French film, entitled Maigret, adapted from Maigret and the Dead Girl. [18] Television [ edit ]
