About this deal

This makes a sweet little gift and is a great way to use up store-cupboard ingredients. If you want to be really generous, gift the other mulled wine ingredients, too, be that the wine, honey or maple syrup, orange juice or even a bottle of spirits. Note that all the ingredients for the pouch are optional – I’ve included a long list in the hope that you’ll have at least some of them to hand. Like chai tea, mulled wine recipes vary greatly, and are delicious even when made with just a few spices. Small muslin bags are the easiest as once you have your spice mix you can just fill them up and pull the string then they are ready. You can also choose to make your spice bags from muslin squares and cut them to size.

Cut oranges and ginger root into 1/8-in. slices, and bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 3 to 4 hours at 170°. Wine: No need to splurge on a pricey bottle — a mid-range bottle of dry red or white wine will do. (Or if you’re making a big batch, this is a great recipe to break out a nicer boxed wine too!) The best wine for mulled wine will be fruity and full-bodied, so that it can withstand the heat and not have its flavor completely drowned out by the aromatics. I recommend looking for a bottle of Zinfandel, Merlot, Grenache, If you are creating mulled wine for yourself you can choose to use sachets or put the spice mix straight into the wine.If you are giving gifts you will want to make them look that extra bit special. You can simply add a brightly coloured bit of ribbon or a small rustic gift tag to your spice sachet. Use Whole Spices. I don’t recommend ground spices, as they will float on top of the wine and not incorporate properly. If you don’t want to invest in big bottles or bags of dried spices, visit a grocery store with a bulk section that has spices, or a spice store that sells smaller quantities.

Achieving the perfect mulled wine requires precise control over temperature and preparation time. To preserve the delicate flavors and alcohol content, heat the wine gently to a simmer (around 160°F or 70°C). Be careful not to let it boil, as excessive heat will alter the taste and evaporate the alcohol. Maintain this temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes to allow the spices and fruit to infuse the wine with their flavors. Using a slow cooker on a low heat setting is an excellent option for maintaining the ideal temperature, as it ensures even and controlled heating. Simply set the cooker to low and let it do the work for you. It also keeps the mulled wine warm for an extended period, making it ideal for serving at gatherings. Serving and Garnishing Voila! I am REALLY hoping to find some extra time while I am home to make this for some last minute gifts for family and friends :) Thanks again to Jenn for another wonderful DIY tutorial! Let us know if you make some this holiday season :) Tip: Be careful not to overheat your wine! While some wines hold up to heat better than others, alcohol in general starts to vaporize at 173 degrees Fahrenheit (78 degrees Celsius).Simmer. Heat until the wine almost reaches a simmer over medium-high heat. (Avoid letting it bubble in any way. Alcohol begins to vaporize at 172°F, so take care to ensure that the wine does not evaporate.) Reduce heat to low, cover completely, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours. Step 2: Cut a section of baker’s twine long enough to float the spices in a large pot, and still wrap around the handle to prevent the tag from falling in. Tie a large knot at one end, and wrap some excess around two fingers to bundle it in a neat coil – this will be stored inside the tag until the spices are being used. Set the coiled twine aside briefly. Also known as glühwein, vino caliente, glögg, vin brulé, bisschopswijn, vin chaud, candola, vinho quente…or literally a hundred other names, depending on where in the world life may find you. Needless to say, it seems like just about everyone in the world loves some hot wine. And clearly, I can vouch that you all do too! Learning how to make mulled wine sachets for gifts for family and friends is easy and fun to do. With everything from choosing which muslin to use to what spices to put in in your hands, you can let your creativity run wild. Don’t Buy the Cheapest (or Most Expensive) Wine. You can be quite economical when making this mulled wine recipe. Because of the added flavors, this is a good place to use a budget-friendly bottle. Don’t choose the very bottom shelf, but you can save the super good stuff to enjoy on its own.
