About this deal

What makes a standard lens ideal for you? Certain important qualities are required, such as fast maximum aperture, versatility for snap shots, portraiture and indoor photography plus a good combination of a wide range of focal lengths in a compact design. SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is the first zoom lens ever to achieve a maximum aperture of f1.8 throughout the zoom range. It is a wide aperture, standard zoom-lens for digital single lens reflex camera's with APS-C size sensor's. *1The lens has a focal range equivalent to 27mm - 52.5mm in a 35mm format and it can cover the angles of view of multiple fixed focal length lenses. This wide aperture, standard zoom lens enables the photographer to expand creative possibilities on any occasion. Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. In the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM lens, Sigma employed an iris diaphragm with nine rounded blades, which has resulted in very nice bokeh in our view. We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective, so we've included several 100% crops for your perusal. While I suppose that any image can be classified as art, my definition for art imagery is far narrower – and this lens has far broader usefulness than my definition's limitations. Due to axial chromatic aberration, focus is critical at macro distances at f/1.8, otherwise you'll get all sorts of colored fringes:

The Canon, Nikon and Sony mount versions of this lens will mount on full-frame DSLRs, and on Nikon cameras DX crop mode will be automatically selected (the camera will therefore shoot at reduced resolution). The rollover below shows the level of vignetting on full frame, with samples shot on a Canon EOS 6D through an Expodisc white balancing filter. The lens's image circle doesn't cover the 35mm full frame format fully at any focal length, giving severe vignetting at 18mm which decreases progressively on zooming in. There's still visible vignetting in the corners at 35mm, which doesn't entirely go away on stopping down, either.

Sigma's choice of F1.8 as maximum aperture isn't a coincidence; it means that the lens will offer the same control over depth of field as an F2.8 zoom does on full frame. What's more, combined with an APS-C sensor, the system will also offer effectively the same light-gathering capability as an F2.8 lens on full frame. By this we mean that it will be able to project an image that's just over twice as bright onto a sensor that's slightly less than half the area, meaning the same total amount of light is used to capture the image. This is important as it's a major determinant of image quality. Essentially it means that APS-C shooters will be able to use lower ISOs when shooting wide open in low light and get similar levels of image noise, substantially negating one of the key advantages of switching to full frame. Since thermal shrinkage is low, [TSC] has a high affinity to metal parts ..." and permits size reduction in other mechanical parts including the zoom ring. The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HCM is a technological marvel, because it is the first zoom lens in history with such a wide / fast aperture. On top of that, Sigma used many high-end features and components that are usually only available on pro-grade full-frame lenses. First, the lens comes with a hypersonic motor (HSM), which provides silent and fast autofocus. NIKON D800E + 18-35mm f/1.8 @ 20mm, ISO 100, 1/800, f/5.6

But because the R5 can shoot 8K video, Movie Cropping applies a 1.6x crop to an 8K image. This creates a 5.1K image, which is then downsampled to 4K. This is what Canon calls “4K Crop” video. Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. Additionally, the Sigma’s “35mm equivalent” focal length range of 27-53mm is standard and well-suited for most video work. Usually this APS-C to full-frame focal length conversion doesn’t work in your favor, but this one does. Cropped, high-quality 4K In the real world, this lens is too darn heavy for what it is —and it looks long enough to be a telephoto, marking you as a pervert in public. While you're making wide shots, others are going to presume you're using a telephoto lens for inappropriate purposes.

From this example, we can see that the 9-blade aperture delivers rather smooth out of focus highlights with a touch of bright edge. When asked if the limited focal length range design was necessary to keep the lens size manageable and the cost affordable, Sigma responded: The rear of this modestly-sized hood has a rubberized surface that makes it easy to grasp for bayonet installation/removal. Upon arrival on the scene, I decided that the 3.25" (82.5mm) Wolf Spider would make a great subject.
