About this deal

A smart plug is ideal for making any standard appliance smart so it can be controlled from an app on your smartphone. Perhaps you want to be able to brew your coffee without having to get out of bed, or perhaps you’re forgetful and are looking for a way to switch your hair straighteners off after you’ve left the house. Lutron's smart starter kit comes with one in-wall switch, one wireless remote and one smart bridge (hub), which can also be used to connect other Lutron products (such as its smart plugs and Serena smart shades) to the cloud and control them. Unscrew the switch from the wall box and pull the switch towards you (taking care not to touch the wires or screws on the side). So while these programmable thermostats are a kind of home automation, it’s a pretty primitive approach when compared to some of the newer types on the market and they certainly cannot be deemed to be‘SMART’ technology– not as we now know it to be, anyway.

Well, it may surprise you to learn that each of these estimates assumes that you are already the kind of person that left your heating set to maintain a constant temperature throughout the day. The difference with more modernSMART heating controlsis that – rather than simply using a number of different sensors to determine how hot or how cold your water and heating system should be – they operate with complex algorithms to achieve the same thing. Some of the newer, more intelligentSMART heating controlsalso have a function that takes into account the outdoor temperature.

A long-press can be used to either dim whichever lights the Smart Button is programmed to control, or turn all of your Hue lights off. The latter can be useful if the Smart Button is fitted by the front door, ready to be pressed when you head out. We’d like to see the option to set a certain scene with a long press, such as one that turns all the lights out apart from a couple of lamps that act as a burglar deterrent, but that isn’t currently possible.

There is a range of home automation products in the Devolo arsenal, but their heating accessories make for a greatSMART heatingsystem. So let’s look at the main benefits of smart thermostats andsmart heatingin a little more detail. Do SMART heating controls save me money? Well, while a standard run-of-the-mill boiler thermostat offers some basic functions like switching the heating on and off, timer settings and some rudimentary temperature controls, aSMART thermostatlets you manage every minute of your home’s heating schedule from the palm of your hand, through a tablet or smartphone. The Lightwave LP21WHMK2 is a smart dimmer switch that allows you to control the lighting in your home through your smartphone or voice-controlled assistants such as Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit. The dimmer switch is simple to install and requires no extra wiring – it can work without a neutral or earth wire.

Functionality: Does it support three-way or four-way connections? What other features does it have? But, they are just as good for anyone with a large home, that boasts an abundance of rooms, or for those amongst you that are determined to reduce bills and keep a tight reign on finances. There are many different variants of this theme, but from a simple – “ what does a smart thermostat do?” perspective, the Wi-Fi controls, internet connection and smart device connectivity is pretty much the foundation of whatsmart heating controlsare all about. With the Lightwave app, you can also create what they call “Magic Buttons” to trigger multiple Lightwave devices with a single press. You can also set up a gentle wake-up call in the morning by automating your lights. The device is available in white metal and is compatible with iOS and Android devices.

With multi-room controls, you can turn the heating off – or perhaps just down a little – in each of the rooms you aren’t using – saving cash, energy and the planet. Smart switches are often bulkier than their traditional counterparts, however; so if they don't fit in the electrical box properly, you may need to get a new box, which is probably a job for an electrician. Similarly, some older homes don't have the right wiring, so an electrician is a good idea here, too. How we test smart light switchesFor those who have one of the best smart home hubs, the Jasco Enbrighten Z-Wave dimmer is a very good smart light switch. It's a cinch to install, as there's no neutral wire needed and the terminals are agnostic. A simple paddle switch handles both on/off duties as well as dimming functions. One function that a lot of theSMART heating control systemshave is a weather-response function – and its probably one of my personal favourites. So, without further ado, what isSMART home heating, how does it work and why should you (or shouldn’t you) get it? What Are SMART Heating Controls? Many of us who are without aSMARTthermostator some other type ofSMARTlinked heating controlswon’t be surprised to learn that we are (more often than not) wasting money heating an empty home. You should be able to identify two white neutral wires in the electrical lighting box. These wires may be tied together and capped with a wire fastener. However, such neutral wiring will not be present in all instances. A flathead screwdriver, Phillips head screwdriver, and handheld voltage tester will be required to identify the neutral wiring.

So because we love to investigate stuff – and we’re all about offering quality service and advice here at BestHeating – we thought we’d put together a comprehensive guide toSMART heating controlsso you have everything you need to get started. Another switch from Philips Hue, but this time it’s the Smart Button. This one really doesn’t need much explaining, as it’s a button that is pretty smart and controls your Hue lights. You can assign two commands to the button, for a brief press and a long press, and that’s about it. Begin the installation by turning the power off at the circuit breaker. A voltage tester should be used to ensure that no power is being generated. Some manufacturers even charge the same for an additionalsmart thermostatas they do for the original kit that you buy, so it is important to weigh that cost against any potential energy bill savings you might make by not heating parts of your home that don’t need heating. The SMART learning thermostatWith no need for an engineer to install the device, it can be relatively inexpensive to put together and will provide room-by-room temperature control. But, there’s a good chance you already know all there is to know aboutSMART heating controls, and you’ll probably be better versed in it all than I am, so if you have a SMART story to tell leave a comment below and share your experience with our blog readers – I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. The Hive Active plug requires either a Hive Active Heating thermostat or Hive Hub, but once you have that, it's simple to set up and use. You can create a schedule (with up to six time slots per day), trigger the plug using the Hive app on your phone, or link it to a Hive switch or sensor. It also works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and HomeKit.
