C.S. Forester’s The Good Shepherd is an excellent example of a book that knows exactly what it is trying to do, and executes it to perfection. Unlike the massively ambitious, sprawling Second World War epics by authors such as Herman Wouk, James Jones, and Vasily Grossman, Forester’s tale of a convoy crossing the Atlantic is intensely focused and self-contained. Its scope is narrowed to the vision of one man; the enormity of the war condensed into a few tense days. they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” The pilot thought Kavanaugh must have bought his old Mosquito with JK painted on it, still flew it on occasion, had seen a plane in distress and directed it to his old base. Before Joe left the room he told the pilot that Kavanaugh died on Christmas Eve, 1943, when he went down with his plane in the North Sea. This is a reference to the judges of Israel who, since they exercised the divine prerogative to judge ( Dt 1:17), were called “gods”; cf. Ex 21:6, besides Ps 82:6 from which the quotation comes. The Good Shepherd ( Greek: ποιμὴν ὁ καλός, poimḗn ho kalós) is an image used in the pericope of John 10:1–21, in which Jesus Christ is depicted as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. Similar imagery is used in Psalm 23 and Ezekiel 34:11–16. The Good Shepherd is also discussed in the other gospels, the Epistle to the Hebrews, the First Epistle of Peter and the Book of Revelation.

C. S. Forester has two skills which are admirably blended in “The Good Shepherd,” a first-rate novel of World War II. He is able to make us identify ourselves with the tensions and the loneliness of man, this time a man in command of many men. He also is able to make us see and hear and feel action, especially when writing of ships and the sea, so vividly that a powerful sense of participation is inevitable. What Does 'I Am the Good Shepherd' Mean?

am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. In Jn 10:7– 8, the figure is of a gate for the shepherd to come to the sheep; in Jn 10:9– 10, the figure is of a gate for the sheep to come in and go out. Structurally, the novel is divided into three chapters, a tiny "set the mood" thing, the actual novel, and a tiny epilog. My take? Don't bother with the opening or the ending, just read the actual novel, Chapter II. The opening just bores me, and the ending actually takes away from what has been written before it, in my opinion. there was a division among the Jews because of these words. i 20Many of them said, “He is possessed and out of his mind; why listen to him?” j 21Others said, “These are not the words of one possessed; surely a demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?” k

Power to take it up again: contrast the role of the Father as the efficient cause of the resurrection in Acts 2:24; 4:10; etc.; Rom 1:4; 4:24. Yet even here is added: This command I have received from my Father. Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. ( A) 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. ( B) 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. ( C) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. ( D) 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. ( E) 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, ( F) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them. The story covers 13 watches (52 hours) aboard the ship's bridge and is told in third person entirely from Krause's point of view as he fights to save his ship, detailing his mood swings from his intense and focused excitement and awareness during combat to his resulting fatigue, depression, and self-doubt as his self-perceived inferiority and inexperience relative to the other captains under his command trouble him—although as the story progresses he is shown to be quite capable. He broods over his career and the wife who left him, partly because of his strict devotion to duty. He is troubled when the press of duty forces him to neglect his prayers (unlike most of Forester's other heroes, Krause is devout). He is troubled by recollections that the Navy review board had twice passed him over for promotion, returning a judgment of fitted and retained because there was little or no opportunity in the prewar Navy. His promotion to commander only came when the United States entered the war, leading him to fear that he may be unsuited to his command. Curiously, I am not giving this novel 5-stars precisely because of how well Forester writes here: The commander gets so exhausted and I identify so strongly with him that I get exhausted while reading it. Edward Jr. follows his father's footsteps in attending Yale and joining Skull and Bones. He then expresses interest in working for the CIA, to Edward's surprise. During an argument about this, Edward admits that he does not love Margaret and only married her because she became pregnant. Margaret begs him to protect their son, which he promises to do. The son of a furrier, he was born in Ashford, Kent, educated at Tonbridge School and later attended the University of Granada. He became one of the youngest pilots in the Royal Air Force at 19, where he served on National Service from 1956 to 1958. Becoming a journalist, he joined Reuters in 1961 and later the BBC in 1965, where he served as an assistant diplomatic correspondent. From July to September 1967, he served as a correspondent covering the Nigerian Civil War between the region of Biafra and Nigeria. He left the BBC in 1968 after controversy arose over his alleged bias towards the Biafran cause and accusations that he falsified segments of his reports. Returning to Biafra as a freelance reporter, Forsyth wrote his first book, The Biafra Story in 1969. The Good Shepherd is a 2006 American spy film produced and directed by Robert De Niro and starring Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, and De Niro, with an extensive supporting cast. Although it is a fictional film loosely based on real events of James Jesus Angleton, it is advertised as telling the untold story of the birth of counterintelligence in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Krause’s entire life comes into focus during two days in 1942 in the North Atlantic. His Christian upbringing, his being “passed over”* for promotion, his failed marriage, but most of all his rigid sense of duty before self all animate the inner dialogue which is the heart of this amazing story.Christmas Eve" ( Noch pered Rozhdestvom, 1832) by Nikolai Gogol (from Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka) Forsyth created this original work as a Christmas gift to his first wife Carrie after she requested a ghost story be written for her. Written on Christmas Day 1974, and published near that time a year later, the idea came while trying to think of a setting away from the typical haunted homes, and seeing planes flying overhead. Many have speculated references to preexisting RAF folklore. While Forsyth is a former RAF pilot and could have heard and adapted such a story (either with or without the intent to do so) no references or anecdotal evidence have been put forward to support such claims.
