Disney's The Little Mermaid Ariel, Ursula & Eric 6" Petite Doll Gift Set". Target . Retrieved June 27, 2023. Carroll, Kathleen (November 15, 1989). " 'The Little Mermaid' is a must sea: 1989 review". New York Daily News. NYDailyNews.com . Retrieved April 6, 2016. Lyricist, producer and writer Howard Ashman had originally envisioned Ursula's relationship with King Triton as a soap opera, and thus drew inspiration from soap opera actress Joan Collins. [13] Ursula was originally conceived as Triton's sister, [14] which would have naturally made the character Ariel's aunt, [15] but the idea was ultimately abandoned. [16] However, their blood relationship is still vaguely alluded to when the character mentions a time during which she actually lived in Triton's palace. [17] Clements and Musker had originally intended for Ursula to remain her original size at the end of the film. [18] However, Katzenberg had just recently seen the film Die Hard (1988), which inspired him to request a "bigger" ending for The Little Mermaid, and thus he instructed the writers to have Ursula grow much larger in size during her climactic fight with Ariel and Eric. She felt a gentle pull on her elbow and turned to see that Florian had woken up. His eyes were still clouded with sleep and pain, but clearly he would not be caught away from his ward again. a b Schmeink, Lars; Böger, Astrid (2012). The representation. This is one of the most diverse casts in terms of gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, and race I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Not only our both our protagonists queer, but so are the majority of the primary cast. Flora/Florian in particular is incredible non-binary/genderfluid representation (and they’re also not the only NB person in this story!)

While Flora/Florian is described as having potential for magic, the way that things work in this story it seems like anyone could perform it if they had the appropriate training and beliefs.

Evelyn also goes through tremendous change, shifting from a pampered girl to someone who has to learn how to use her wits to fend for herself. When we first meet her, she’s used to doing whatever she wants and commanding her servants, which we spill out when she’s on the ship. Evelyn also has a big old streak of spite related to her parents, which is fair, since they’ve sold her through marriage to the highest bidder. Seeing the way Florian/Flora changes Evelyn is beautiful and just as satisfying as his/her arc. a b c d Dundes, Alan (2008). Bloody Mary in the Mirror: Essays in Psychoanalytic Folkloristics. Ursula is a truly iconic character in the Disney franchise. Tokuda-Hall aptly explores themes of gender identity and misogyny while illustrating colonialism’s horrors, in which even children must steal from and harm each other to survive. Interstitials by the sea lend a global viewpoint that ripples through the story without disrupting the narrative.

No chosen ones. I cannot stand the chosen one narratives. It's lazy to have your character be special and important just 'cuz. Show us your character becoming better, working hard, and earning their place and power in the world. This is one of the big reasons why Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom is a more satisfying read than the original Grishaverse trilogy, for example. It’s why the Priory of the Orange Tree started out so promising, but then ended so disappointingly. I am tired of books that use special bloodlines as the mechanism for characters’ special powers, skills and abilities. In this story, we see both Flora/Florian and Evelyn strive, struggle, and work to gain power, safety, and knowledge. The things that happen to them in the story are a result of their own actions and efforts. a b c d e f g Neuwirth, Allan (2013). Makin' Toons: Inside the Most Popular Animated TV Shows and Movies. For example, the character of Evelyn being sent to a place far away to go marry somebody with her casket in tow is a real thing that lower middle class French girls did to go to Louisiana, which is where the vampire myth started. I heard that on a ghost tour in Louisiana, and I was like, "Well consider that stolen. Like, that's mine now." Ursula is a fictional character who appears in Walt Disney Pictures' animated film The Little Mermaid (1989). Voiced by actress Pat Carroll, Ursula is a villainous Cecaelian sea witch who offers a mermaid princess named Ariel a temporary opportunity to become human so that she may earn the love of Prince Eric within three days. However, Ursula is, in fact, determined to sabotage Ariel's chances so that she can ultimately usurp King Triton's position as ruler of the oceans.
