Cai, Delia (June 16, 2022). " 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Is Wistful Fantasy for the Whole Family". Vanity Fair. Archived from the original on July 1, 2022 . Retrieved June 25, 2022. y'know, I had very low expectations. very, very low expectations. Somehow, they weren't even reached. the show is so, SO much better than the books, and Belly is the whiniest, most annoying character I have EVER had the displeasure of reading about June 20, 2022: edited some of my ranting here from the time I was in the 10th grade because *cringe*]

The thing that bother me the most was the girl, Belly, she was VERY annoying. I also just couldn't connect with the story, I mean all the book is about how much she loooooves Conrad (one of her mom's best friend's sons) and everything in her lifes revolves around Conrad.I stood by the fire alone and pretended to warm my hands even though they weren't cold. That's when I saw him. He was standing alone too, drinking a bottle of water. It didn't seem like he knew anybody either, since he was standing all by himself." Ah! Ms. Han, you have such an elegant, easy way of making contradicting words and plain sentences flow so naturally! So barely noticeable! Continuing on, Now a hit series on Prime Video, catch up on The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy in this collection of the original books! Sun, sand, sea, and romance... what more do you want? Fox, Aubrey (July 12, 2023). "The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 Review: A Teen Love Triangle Gets Predictably Messy". Looper . Retrieved August 16, 2023.

Every summer Belly and her family stay at her mother's best friend’s home in Cousins Beach. As a child, Belly felt left out because of the four children, she was the youngest and the only girl. However, this summer, both Conrad and Jeremiah have noticed how much she has changed over the last year. Belly gets the impression that this will be an unforgettable summer because of their interest in her. The Summer I Turned Pretty books, which were originally released between 2009 and 2011, follow the complicated love life of Isabel “Belly” Conklin when she overgoes a transformation from awkward tween to blossoming beauty. Every summer, Belly, her mom, and her big brother Steven head to Cousins Beach to spend the season with her mom’s best friend and her two oh-so-handsome sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. But this summer is different. Conrad, Belly’s longtime crush, seems to finally feel the same way about her… just as Jeremiah also starts to see Belly as someone more than Steven’s little sister. It’s a love triangle that makes this summer, one Belly will never forget. When Belly finds out Jeremiah has cheated on her, she wants to end the relationship. In a desperate attempt to amend his mistake, he proposes. Belly hesitantly says yes, although it devolves into many fights with her mother, who thinks she is too young to get married. Surrounded by Laurel's friend Susannah ( Rachel Blanchard) , her sons, Jeremiah ( Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad ( Christopher Briney) , and another teen named Cam ( David Iacono), Belly suddenly finds herself in an emotional love story she never saw coming. Throughout the original book, both Jeremiah and Conrad struggle with the news that their parents are divorcing. In the show, though, it's not clear whether Laurel and the boys' father are separating. But she does clue viewers into the fact that her husband cheated on her throughout the first round of chemo. Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of young love, self-discovery, and bittersweet moments with the remarkable Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han. This captivating series, consisting of three beautifully written novels, will transport you to the sun-kissed beaches and emotional rollercoasters of Belly Conklin's transformative journey through summers filled with love, friendship, and heartache. This guide to The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy shares everything you need to know about New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han’s beloved coming-of-age young adult Summer romance book series set in the Summer. (one of my favorite Summer book quotes!)

I'm more than certain that I was influenced by the tv show and its portrayal of the characters because I was a simp for Conrad all book long, even if the narration didn't really make me feel something. It's in plain sight, tho: it doesn't matter what she's doing or who she is with, Belly always finds a way to think about Conrad. This is love, people!Although Belly and Cam date throughout the summer, romantic tension between Belly and Conrad grows. At a house party, Conrad becomes aggressive with a young man in his twenties. To prevent them from coming to blows, Belly steps between them to break up the argument. Later, as she sits alone with Conrad in a car, he gently strokes her hair. He is on the verge of saying something to her, but the moment passes. Susannah's cancer worsening means her sons coming to terms with her looming death and their conflict over Belly. Belly wants to resolve the conflict as well but also wants to help the two families stand up to an apparent threat against their beloved summer house. Valedictorian Steven seems to act strangely after his high school graduation.

Toward the end of the novel, Belly’s attraction to Cam wanes, and after Jeremiah reveals his interest in her, she can no longer deny her crush on Conrad. Unwilling to let her affection remain unspoken, Belly confronts Conrad and tells him that she loves him. He rejects her, which leads to a physical altercation between the Fisher brothers. After Laurel breaks up the fight, Belly discovers the secret behind underlying tension in the house; Susannah’s cancer has returned, and she does not have long to live. Belly switches her attention from romance to supporting the Fisher family through their painful time. She comforts Jeremiah, promises Susannah that she’ll look after Conrad when she’s gone, and listens to Conrad express his devastation. Belly and Conrad share a kiss, but Conrad explains he is too distraught about his mother to start a relationship now. The Summer I Turned Pretty book series follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin who travels to Cousins Beach every summer with her mom and her big brother Steven to spend the season with her mom’s best friend and her sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. She’s only been in love twice in her life, with Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. But this summer, she has to make the final decision.Things had been weird with me and Conrad and also with me and Jeremiah-an impossible thought crept its way into my head. Was it possible they didn't want me with Came? Because THEY, like, had feelings for me?" I love how Jenny Han seems to remember how teenagers act, because by putting that single unnecessary "like" into the sentence truly, legit, won me over. I had no idea how poetic daily teen slang could have been. Belly has always had a crush on Conrad. With Jeremiah, they were only friends. The summer they return to the beach house, Belly has become a beautiful 16-year-old woman catching both brothers’ attention. Petski, Denise (April 28, 2022). " 'The Summer I Turned Pretty': Premiere Date Set For Prime Video Series Adaptation Of Jenny Han's YA Novel". Deadline . Retrieved May 12, 2023. I've read many books with annoying but-bearable protagonists, but this one made me want to pull my own hair out. which means, if you know anything about little sisters, that my books are being treated like a library. except with no organizational system or accountability of any kind. which is how upon my return, i happened to see her tearing through this series like she owned it.
