About this deal

Both males and females have a set of horns, and they use this as a defense mechanism but are not always that successful as their horns grow to the side of their heads. Another very interesting about wildebeests is that they have a set of pre-orbital glands on their faces. And can be seen rubbing their faces in dirt patches, thus marking their territory, but also advertise themselves to females. The Marabou Stork

The Egyptians believe that vultures are a symbol of death because they are commonly found feeding on the carcass of a dead animal. Historically, the Egyptians used vultures in their burial ceremonies. In addition, you’d think they smell bad , b ut most vultures are meticulous about their hygiene. Up close, once they’ve bathed after feeding, Cape vultures (also called Cape griffons) have a sweet, talcum-powder smell. A set pattern is followed throughout the story as the animals continue to walk and find a new friend to join their group. The pattern begins by the animals noticing another unusual looking creature, the creature then describes who they are before the rest of the group asks them to join their ‘clan’. The animals continue on their walk by singing the song.Mason wanted some superheroes in the story, whereas Michelle thought: “It was fun. I liked when they found their babies and the stork who pooed on his legs.” So it is with a heavy heart that I have to report that The Ugly Five was something of a disappointment. For a school librarian, this is as close to sacrilege as you can get. If you’re heading for the bush , the winter months (May to September) offer cooler temperatures and less greenery, which means animals can be seen more easily.

Yet for better or worse, these five have earned themselves an unfortunate place in the official Ugly Five listing. Curiously, warthogs are omnivorous, meaning they can eat both vegetation and meat. Their diet consists mostly of grass, bulbs, and roots, but they will occasionally scavenge for meat scraps. Who would have thought? An Unsightly Summary of The Ugly 5 When it comes to animal spotting, most people are well aware of the ‘ Big 5’. Some may even have heard of the ‘Little 5’. T The Ugly 5 is a whimsical listing of animals that includes the hyena, marabou stork, vulture, warthog and wildebeest. The list provides a fun alternative when the Big 5 are proving difficult to see. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many think the Ugly 5 are gorgeous. Their diet largely includes greens – such as grass, roots, and bulbs. They are often seen on their knees when feeding, as they also use their tusks for digging up food. The WildebeestThe reader would need to have experience of empathy and support so they could put themselves in that situation and see what it may be like to feel that you are not beautiful or wanted. The story teaches about friendships and the importance of family. It allows children to explore ‘beauty’ and how there is more than what meets the eye. However, when exploring the narrative of this story teachers may need to be wary of the past experiences that the children may have had before digging deeper into the teachings the story could hold. There are three species of hyena in the Hyaenidae family. Namely, the striped hyena, brown hyena, and spotted hyena. The lesser-known aardwolf is an additional member in the same family.

Everyone enjoyed hearing about the Marabou stork, which poos on its legs - apparently to cool itself down - and there was fascination about exactly what the meat was that the hyena and the vulture were eating. One nature-documentary watching child thought that the answer would not please the wildebeest. Think about how the different animals move. Could you try to recreate these movements? Could you put together a dance or a performance to show these movements? Some sources single out the lappet-faced vulture as the vulture’s representative in the Ugly 5. Although most of Africa’s 11 vulture species could make the cut – none are blessed with particularly good looks. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. However, much like the marabou storks, vultures have a crucial role to play in nature. They’re respected members of Africa’s ‘ clean-up crew’ for their ability to keep our wildlife reserves tidy. Still, it pains me to say it, but I thought it was ever so slightly dull. I just don’t think it is destined to be a classic. Their powerful jaws can crush the bones of some of Africa’s largest animals, and their strong stomach acid makes easy work of any meal. Hyenas will eat almost anything, including hoofs and bones.

Small five animals include the leopard tortoise, ant lion, elephant shrew, rhinoceros beetle, and the buffalo weaver. SHY 5.

The plains of the savannah are home to some of the world’s most majestic creatures, but this is not a book about them. This is a book about the other animals that don’t always get the limelight; the dumpy, the lumpy and the smelly. When five less than pretty animals get together they all decide that they are the ugliest creatures around. Can anyone love a face as hideous as theirs? Would this be a good book to read aloud to the class or would it be good for Shared or guided reading? Shy five include the meerkat, aardvark, porcupine, aardwolf, and the cute looking bat-eared fox. UGLY 5. The stomach acid of a vulture is more powerful and corrosive than that of other birds or animals. These scavengers can eat rotting carcasses infected by dangerous bacteria, as the acid kills the bacteria and does not threaten their health.
