About this deal

I have to say that when I moved away from the putting green to hit some pitches that I found the Wilson very agreeable. As you can see apart from one obvious mishit my ball speeds and carry numbers were really consistent. I am not convinced in a blind pitching test that I would have been able to tell the difference between the Wilson and more premium models on test. Perhaps the most interesting golf ball in Wilson's current lineup is the new Staff Model R. From a construction standpoint, it mirrors the Staff Model and is Wilson’s second premium golf ball offering, designed for Tour-quality distances and feel. Like the Staff Model, the Staff Model R features a four-piece construction and Wilson’s V-COR core, which combine to produce explosive distances in the long game. It also delivers the control and feel that golfers want with their scoring clubs on full shots and around the green. For what it’s worth, our John Barba, who also played the Staff Model R, found no cause for concern.

QC at the source factory sometimes allows outliers to slip through, creating inconsistencies within your box of balls. When a ball gets a minor scuff or scrape, it’s typically in the paint layers. Urethane is more durable than paint so Wilson contends the Staff Model R will prove more resilient to the minor damage that most golfers associate with durability. The 362-dimple pattern and cast-urethane cover provide golfers ultimate control and tour-level spin on iron and wedge shots. The hard, ionomer outer mantle and high CIS polybutadiene core deliver increased ball speeds for impressive distance. The Staff Model ball also features an HPF inner mantle to help give players a soft feel and maximum spin. At The Golf Shop Online, we are dedicated to offering you the most competitive prices. We found a bit of debris in the core of a single Staff Model R that wasn’t considered significant enough to be problematic. Cover

The Wilson Staff Model R fell into the low end of the Average range. That can be attributed to six balls that were appreciably heavier than the others in the sample. Spin & Control With 4 Layers More Layers -Increased spin. Better command. Off the tee, unrivalled distance and shot shaping. On the fairways, it's possible to work like a pro. The stability ofapproach approaches is predictable, and control around the green is superb. Once again, these findings aren’t atypical of what we see for Foremost-made balls. Typically, balls are generally consistent and often above average for some metrics. However, significant outliers are far from uncommon. Compression Consistency Wilson has also implemented its new V-COR construction to create a core that delivers increased velocity and distance gains through the bag. Additionally, a proprietary painting process ensures the finish on each ball is perfect and that every Staff Model ball performs as intended on the course. Finally, it comes with a seamless 362-dimple pattern which helps to produce a flatter, more controlled trajectory, which makes the Wilson Staff Model an excellent option for golfers who often find themselves playing in windy conditions. I don't know if I should talk about putting because the feel is so subjective. I felt on putts the Staff was a bit more lively off the putterface than other balls... not quite to the extent of a Chrome Soft but just a little different. This early in the year my putting is too awful to really draw conclusions.

The Wilson Staff Model is one of the best premium golf balls on the market and a ball that is being played on professional tours around the world. The Staff Model features a four-piece construction and soft urethane cover - a combination that delivers exceptional distance off the tee while providing players with maximum control and exceptional feel from 100 yards out. As its name might suggest, the Wilson Duo Soft+ is the softest golf ball in the current Wilson range. In fact, its compression rating of 35 is among the lowest of any golf ball that’s been manufactured in recent years. The Duo Soft+ features a two-piece construction and a surlyn cover. That said, while surlyn is significantly less responsive than urethane, which is also far more expensive, the Duo Soft+ provides better greenside control than what players might normally expect from a two-piece ball. Dimples drive the aerodynamics of a golf ball. Paint coats the dimples. Therefore, paint has the potential to impact and even disrupt the aerodynamic performance of the golf ball. Nothing but good news and semi-interesting footnotes here. Across both models, we didn’t find a single ball that failed to meet our standard for roundness. Likewise, none of the balls measured was above the USGA limit of 1.62 ounces. The bottom line is that the Wilson Staff Model R, anecdotally anyway, appears to live up to the lower-launch, higher-spin billing. Unfortunately, that also means it’s not a particularly good fit for me.The performance piece is intriguing, though not in a way that works for me. I’m a high-spin guy, so any ball that can deliver on a promise of more spin throughout the bag isn’t going to ideal for me.

Wedges: Dynacraft Dual Millled 52*, SteelFiber i125 S -or- Scratch 8620 DD 53*, SteelFiber i125 S; Cobra Snakebite 56* -or- Wilson Staff PMP 58*, Dynamic S -or- Ram TW282 SW -or- Ram TW276 SW Not only that, but because it spins much less it will also allow average golfers to find more fairways as it won't deviate as much with side spin from hooks or slices. So basically, it’s straighter and longer, but only if you aren’t a highly accomplished player. Here at Golf Monthly, our highly experienced team of testers play a lot of golf in different conditions throughout the year. Through our rigorous testing procedures, our collective goal is to test every golf model on the market as soon as it becomes available, putting in the hours in all weathers out on the golf course, the practice ground and the short-game area. In fairness to Wilson, they aren’t claiming their ball flies straighter than every other ball, just that they are removing the ‘rogue’ element that you will get with an inconsistently painted golf ball.First, whether you want to call it dirt or patina, that part of the story is absolutely real. The ball discolors relatively easily and while a good bit of the worst of it will come off in the ball washer, if you like your golf balls shiny, bright and white, the Staff R probably won’t be your favorite. Another urethane 4-piece ball very much the same as the Staff Model R. The obvious difference is that this ball is painted, albeit with "a finely controlled application process that ensures every urethane ball leaves the factory with a near-flawless finish". It is important to point out here that this does not impact on performance at all but visually it will be off-putting to some golfers. You don’t expect a brand new shiny golf ball that you’ve only played two holes with to look like one that has been lying in a muddy ditch for six months.

Are you very much a classic white ball player, or someone open to playing something a little different as the golf ball world evolves? There's more choice than ever in this regard and if you are reading this guide, chances are you want a slightly different color or look to your golf ball. The painting process can frequently result in balls with poor, uneven paint coverage and pooling of paint in these shallow dimples,” said Frank Simonutti, Global Director of Golf Ball Innovation. “This can significantly affect the trajectory and the directional stability of the flight of the ball. By eliminating the paint, we were able to eliminate all of the shortcomings attributed to the painting process used on all golf balls.“ Staff Model R is unpainted as the dimple cross-section geometry, and the pattern of dimples on a golf ball are critical aerodynamic elements that affect the flight performance of the ball in terms of trajectory, distance, and directional stability. These dimples are a mere 0.004-0.007 inches deep and super sensitive to the level of paint on the ball,” said Bob Thurman, Vice President, Wilson Labs. The Wilson Staff Model ball is very white. This seems to be the way with some brands. They are a kind of brilliant white as opposed to the repressed look I am used to. The model R has a duller look. The branding is also very sure of itself, the Staff brand is bold in its modern, capitalised type face. The Staff Model’s four layers work together to produce unmatched shot-shaping off the tee, Tour-level workability off the fairways, predictable stability on approach shots and exceptional control around the green”, says Global Director of Wilson Golf Ball Innovation Frank Simonutti.More layers. Higher spin. Better control. Unmatched distance and shot-shaping off the tee. Tour-level workability on the fairways. Predictable stability on approach shots and exceptional control around the green. It’s a unique approach to the market which is exactly the route smaller brands like Wilson need to take to capture attention. About the Wilson Staff Model and Staff Model R The True Price will always be equal to or greater than the retail price. The greater the difference between the retail price and the True Price, the more you should be concerned about the quality of the ball. Seniors and higher handicap players on the other hand generally don’t have that kind of control anyway as it comes from superior ball striking. So the DUO gives them the benefit of considerably more distance with their irons shots.
