About this deal

Otherwise, using the lens with a Nikon camera is pretty much identical in experience to using it with one of the other mounts. Focusing is fast, accurate and quiet, making it well-suited to a range of different subjects. The inbuilt image stabilisation of the 55-200mm f/3,5-4.8 is impressive, allowing the use of slow shutter speeds to prevent camera shake even when hand-holding in low light situations. Imagine being able to shoot 4 or 5 stops slower than you usually would with a long-range zoom lens and still have a sharp photo!

A 16mm wide-angle lens has a field-of-view of 107 degrees – but a 16mm fisheye has a field-of-view of 180 degrees. They have the same focal length but each one is designed for a different purpose. The 16mm wide-angle is designed to keep straight lines straight. Is 16mm considered fisheye? Of course, you have to balance out the extra editing time with how fun this lens is to use – it really doesn’t weigh anything, and its bright aperture and wide focal length combine to make it a really fun lens for street photography. It also has obvious landscape photography applications, and it’s easy to imagine doing the confetti run at weddings. If you’re after something wide, sharp and bright you are simply not going to do better on the RF mount for this kind of cash. For portrait photography, I prefer a prime lens such as the XF90mm F2.0 because of its sharpness and bokeh ” explains Andrew Hall. Above: Before wrapping-up my review, I wanted to provide more detail on the thorny subject of lens corrections. Like many compact and affordable lenses today, the RF 16 2.8 makes substantial use of digital corrections, in particular to compensate for significant barrel distortion. If you shoot video or JPEGs in-camera, you won’t notice a thing as the corrections take place automatically and you’re left with a normal-looking image. If you shoot RAW, applying the lens profile in your software will have the same effect, but it also gives you the chance to turn it off to see what’s happening behind the scenes. For many photographers (including myself), this is one of the best Fuji prime lenses ever made. When I tested a range of Fujifilm lens options for this review, I had this Fuji 23mm f/1.4 on my camera 90% of the time… and absolutely loved it.

When it comes to portraits, 50mm primes lenses are perfect for capturing 3/4 length and full-length portraits. Thanks to 50mm lenses having a slightly wider field of view, you can capture more of the scene in your images. Is 16mm good for vlogging? A final word has to be reserved for the lens’ geometry, which while not bad, isn’t perfect – there’s a fair bit of barrel distortion. As with vignetting and purple fringing, this is something even a barely-competent photo editor will be able to sort more or less invisibly, but it’s worth bearing in mind that your images might need a touch more editing before they’re shareable. Above: Plus at the time I made this review, the profile wasn’t yet available in Adobe Camera RAW, so all RAW files started off uncorrected. My choice would be the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR with its constant f/2.8 aperture, fast autofocus, and versatile focal length range, which makes it perfect for a wide range of event photography needs.

One of the most versatile lenses for photography and videography is the 50mm normal lens. Using a 50mm lens for B-roll is one of the more beneficial video tips. It’s a good lens for general use and for A-roll, too. What lens do Youtubers use? As for the build, you’ll know by now that all the Fuji X mount lenses are built out of metal to outlast your life as a photographer. As with all pro-grade Fuji zooms, the 50-140mm f/2.8 isn’t compact or light, but the internal zoom and focus mean that the lens doesn’t ‘grow’ at least! The 16mm f/1.4 is a perfect match for cameras such as the Fujifilm X-H1 (reviewed here), with its in-body image stabilisation. When combined with the wide-angle and fast aperture, you can get away with hand-holding at slow shutter speeds for up to 1 second and still get a steady shot! With so many lens options available on the market, it can become overwhelming to select the best lens to capture the best shot.

when designed for full-frame 35mm cameras and around 10mm for subframe cameras. 15mm and 16mm full-frame fisheyes, when used in cropped cameras, just act as moderately wide-angle lenses, with only a little fishiness visible. Is 16mm wide enough for landscape? Above: Surely simply setting the switch on the lens from Control to Focus indicates you want to use the ring to focus, but no, you’ll need a more expensive lens with a dedicated AF / MF switch for that convenience. I really hope this is changed with a firmware update, as a growing number of budget RF lenses employ this simplified control strategy.
