Choose a battery-powered pole hedge trimmer for convenience – there’s no cable and you can go anywhere in the garden. Most battery-powered trimmers have sufficient power to handle standard garden hedges. Look for a battery life of at least 30 minutes. On the plus side, there is no battery that might run out, no fumes being emitted, and no need to stop a job until it is complete. This can offer peace of mind to some gardeners. The bright orange garden tool brand Yard Force might not be the most well-known name out there, but they certainly know how to make one of the best lightweight pole hedge trimmers on the market. Boasting a 20-volt battery system, and clever space-saving features, the Yard Force 20V Cordless Hedge Trimmer is a brilliant, lightweight pole trimmer that’s ideal for smaller garden jobs. One further thing to consider when buying a telescopic hedge trimmer is how small it compacts down. Most telescopic trimmers, even when not extended, can still be quite long (somewhere in the region of 170 cm).

Due to this trimmer’s one-piece folding body and ultralight frame, I’ve reached for it more than the rest for any odd jobs around the garden. Combined with the big 4.0 Ah battery I was using, it tipped the scales at nearly 5 kg. That’s a lot of weight to deal with, especially when so much of it is at the end of a long, narrow pole. More often than not, hedge trimmers will be used for cutting conifers. To comfortably cut a conifer hedge, you’ll need a trimmer that can handle at least 14 mm branches .
