About this deal

Copra is a powder so it is hard to get horses to eat large quantities of it. The copra can be increased by pelleting it. The powder can be added to a diet or mixed with sweet food like beet pulp mash. We advise feeding your horse little and often, and always make sure your horse has access to clean, fresh water. The Final Touch for Balanced Nutrition: As CoolStance is not a complete feed, we recommend using VitaStance Vitamin and Mineral mix or VitaStance B1 Cool Mix in combination with CoolStance to ensure a nutritionally balanced diet for your horse.

Last is protein. Protein is an interesting one. Copra has a reputation for being a poor quality protein. And yes, if you compare it to soybean it is poor quality. BUT, and this is a big but, we don’t ever use copra for its protein. As in we wouldn’t recommend you use copra for a horse that needs extra protein in its diet because there are better options. In a similar way to management of an EMS diagnosed horse or pony, laminitis is a condition that should be managed as a form of prevention. Laminitis is a complex disease where the laminae in the hoof, which are the structures responsible for suspending the horses pedal bone from the hoof wall, become inflamed. When the laminae inflame, they lose their integrity and allow the weight of the horse to drive the pedal bone downward through the hoof, damaging arteries, veins, the corium of the coronet and the sole of the hoof. Once the pedal bone moves, the condition is then referred to as founder. Weight, diet and exercise are all important factors to consider when managing a horse or pony prone to laminitis. If a horse or pony has laminitis due to being overweight, we would recommend offering reduced amounts of CoolStance Copra until the horse’s weight has been successfully managed. Due to Copra being low in sugar and starch, it is a suitable choice for a laminitis prone horse.

Key Benefits

For example a lucerne/alfalfa, beet-pulp based diet is high calcium, low phosphorus. Add copra and it raises the phosphorus without also unnecessarily increasing calcium. And that helps you both meet phosphorus requirement and keep the calcium to phosphorus ratio balanced (FeedXL works all of this out for you!). Cool Stance can be wet-down to form a mash or it can be fed dry, provided that plenty of clean drinking water is also available (this enables the horse to regulate its intake of Cool Stance and water).

So what’s the BUT?! Well, we use copra as a source of energy… and compared to OTHER energy sources like cereal grains and beet pulp, copra has BETTER quality protein… so it’s like an extra little bonus, in adding energy you also get more essential amino acids than if you had used say cooked barley or beet pulp. As long as it is being used as a source of energy and not being used for protein as such. Premium Copra Meal is the ideal choice for horses in light to medium work who do not require high energy feeds. It is an excellent weight gain feed that can be used to boost any premix feed, or fed mixed with chaff and minerals as a balanced base diet. CoolStance can be fed dry or as a wet mash. Some horse may prefer the texture of CoolStance® when it is wet. I am an equine nutritionist and invented Coolstance. I fully understand the rules regarding promotion of products. Why Feeding a Mash is Beneficial: In the UK and Europe, we would recommend feeding CoolStance wet or damp. Horses in these countries are subjected to damper pasture, higher rainfall, and softer hay. Consequently, our horses produce less saliva when eating. Feeding CoolStance wet, is a great way of ensuring your horse has access to a greater water intake. Furthermore helping rehydration. What’s more, it will help with dust irritation.Retired/resting – The horse weighs 500kg and is retired to the field. We would recommend feeding approximately 500g of Copra per day split between two feeds. Protein – CoolStance® contains the gluconeogenic amino acids asparagine, glutamine, arginine, alanine, valine and serine, which can be used to produce glucose for energy.

In addition to low NSC, the product is high in fiber. The fiber fractions of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) seem high for a feedstuff considered a concentrate. The nutritional composition reveals that the fiber fractions are like those of temperate pasture grasses. The percentage of digestible fiber (hemicellulose) is comparable to fresh early vegetative orchardgrass at approximately 25%. Therefore, the energy from the fiber fraction of copra would be similar to that of grass but the higher fat content will make the total product more calorie-dense. Estimations for actual digestible energy content of copra put it in the same energy range as beet pulp or soy hulls.

Nutrient Specifications - Typical Analysis

CoolStance can be wet-down to form a mash or it can be fed dry, provided that plenty of clean drinking water is also available (this enables the horse to regulate its intake of CoolStance and water). Technical information does not beat observation. Often you horse will tell you what is working and what is not. CoolStance copra is non grain, and often used to replace grain to establish a baseline.
