About this deal

After a brief Pozidriv/Supadriv digression, how does one find a good screwdriver for Phillips and/or JIS screws? In Chapter 3.2. I explained how JIS was discontinued as a standard in 2008, so now there is only ISO 8764. In other words: almost no manufacturers today make and sell screwdrivers noted as “JIS”, only “Phillips, ISO 8764-1, 2”. Some might (also) mention “DIN 5260-PH”, but no “JIS”. In the 1960s Koyama Iron Works built its reputation for manufacturing strong and heavy-duty pliers, explaining the company’s range to include long-nose pliers and nippers in the 1970s. Three Peaks Giken Brand Profile Headquarters The goal of this article (and my research for it) was to help myself find a screwdriver that fits well and doesn’t cam-out. In other words: how can I tell, before trying (and buying), if a screwdriver will work properly with a bicycle, motorcycle and other cross-head screws?

Today, VESSEL is the oldest manufacturer for manual screwdrivers in Japan. VESSEL is known for their high-quality tool making and have been producing manual screwdrivers since 1916 – which is almost 20 years before Henry Phillips invented the American- known Phillips® screwdriver! On the other hand: no other screwdriver will fit Pozidriv/Supadriv screws – it will slip out and damage them. So pay attention when you come across these types of screws, and use appropriate screwdrivers: Phillips (left), and Pozidriv (right) screws One of the differences between JIS and Phillips head screws is that only the former has a small dot in the corner. If you look at a Phillips head screw, you’ll only see the four crisscrossing slots. JIS screws have these same four crisscrossing slots, but they also have a depressed hole in the corner. When you come across a screw with a dot in the corner, it’s safe to assume it’s a JIS screw. There are dozens of different screw heads, but only JIS screws have this characteristic.

It is often a recommended choice for craftsmen who need unique files that can do specific jobs with great ergonomics and control. A silly problem is, you have to buy a separate impact driver holder to house these bits. That’s an extra expense for sure. Difference Between Japanese and Phillips Screwdrivers Small note, I see you recommend the Wera Rostfrei screwdriver. While Wera does indeed make really nice, good quality screwdrivers (however no longer German made… Wiha still makes their stuff in Germany tho) If you love mechanics, bike building, woodworking, gardening, or other handicrafts and hobbies, Japanese companies provide the tools you need.

NEVER, EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES try to dress or fix a damages screwdriver tip. You will never get it right and you will damage every screw you touch with it. In my maintenance shop our tool policy was turn a damaged tool into the toolroom, get a replacement with no paperwork and no questions asked. For those who wish to go on to a university, it helps a lot. Giving them a sort of a preparation, to make things easier later on. On paper, it differs a lot from Phillips, but in real life, people often confuse the two – which results in damaged screws that can no longer be unscrewed even using a matching screwdriver. The screwdrivers they produced were included with industrial equipment like sewing machines and looms.
