About this deal

Oil-based leather dyes penetrate the leather deeply, so the color goes beyond the surface. The colors are usually vibrant. Since these dyes are oil-based, less moisture is pulled from the leather when drying than with alcohol-based dyes. To the left is a photo showing a close up as before. This time you will notice where the Leather Binder has filled in some areas and the Flexifil others.

Usually, before applying lacquer finishes, an important tip is to apply a thin coating of liquid wax finish. However, when water-soluble dyes are used prior to lacquering, the result is always awesome. On the other hand, it doesn’t work well with acrylic paint finishes. Corrected Grain - This is a leather that has artificial grain applied to its surface and this leather does not meet the standards that is required for creating vegetable-tanned or aniline leather. The imperfections are corrected or sanded off and an artificial grain is embossed into the surface with dyes.Any flat surface can do. Working on the ground is possible. Even a wide board placed on some saw horses can work. The key is that it is a stable surface so that as you’re working with the dyeing, everything stays in place. Custom leather dye colors can be made by mixing existing leather dye colors. These generally follow the natural properties of the color chart by mixing the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. Here are a few examples: One factor to consider when working outside is if the work area is under trees or anything else that might drop debris onto the leather piece. Usually this isn’t a big issue, just something to keep in mind. A patio table with an umbrella raised can be an ideal location. It is best when leaves, acorns, or anything animals might drop is kept away from falling onto the piece during the several stages of drying. Work Area – The Temperature Metallic Leather is a type of leather that has had a metal layer of material added to it during the finishing process. This layer creates a metallic, shiny, reflective look to the finished leather. It provides a finishing option that is most often used in clothing, accessories, and handbags. Nappa (Napa) The Leather Finish is the same finish that we removed at the start of the process. It’s applied by airbrush so it’s important to ensure your airbrush is cleaned thoroughly after spraying the Leather Colourant.

The above process will have removed the manufacturers finish and any silicones that are soluble in solvents. There are however some silicones like spray on polish and waxes that aren't soluble in solvents, and so to remove these we need to use the Alcohol Cleaner. After using the Leather Prep wipe the leather down with a cloth dampened in the Alcohol Cleaner and for ease of use you could also spray the Alcohol Cleaner directly onto the leather. Now wait 30 minutes for the prep to evaporate. Vegetable tanned leather is stronger and can withstand the daily wear and tear and with proper care can last more than a life time. This type of leather ages well developing a natural patina as you wear it. A leathered surface is lower maintenance and doesn’t require as much cleanup all the time. Because of its textured nature, it does a good job at hiding fingerprints, smudges, water spots, and even crumbs. When compared to a honed finish, it does offer more stain resistance. But if it gets damaged, it may be more difficult to replicate the finish, so a larger area or even the whole countertop might require refinishing. The most common items used to burnish leather includes wooden or metal spoon s , glass bottle s, smooth stones, and on some occasions a piece of cloth has been used for burnishing leather. These items are used to bring out a natural glass-like sheen of the leather. The sun is a natural leather dye. When exposed to the UV rays from the sun, unfinished, vegetable tanned leather will darken over time. It does take time, though some leather crafters use this method to naturally change the colors of leather to a darker color. Paint as a Leather Dye Top Grain – This is the second highest grade of leather after full grain. It is split from the top layer of blemished hide and then it is sanded and refinished to get rid of scars and scrapes. It is still strong and durable. It is mainly used for garment manufacturing. It has greater stain resistance than full grain leather if its finish is maintained. Some dyes come very concentrated and produce deep, rich colors. When looking to achieve a particular color, it might be preferred to lighten the dye up a bit. NOTE: It is fine to apply another coat of Binder on top of the Flexifil if necessary. Even if you apply colour and think it could be re-filled, it is ok to apply Flexifil on top of the colour. This helps to achieve a smooth finish.
