About this deal

George IV's only daughter, Princess Charlotte was a popular princess, seen as a fresh hope to come after her unpopular father. The nation rejoiced at her wedding to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg in 1816. Linecar, Howard W.A. (1977). British Coin Designs and Designers. London: G. Bell & Sons Ltd. ISBN 978-0-7135-1931-0. The Army and Navy Club commissioned the bust to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s Coronation in 1887. It was commissioned as a celebration of her reign and the loyalty of the club. The club remarked, ‘this is a work of great accomplishment for which Gilbert was rightly renowned and which clearly conveys the regal bearing of the Queen while also showing the delicacy of fine and sensitive detail.’ Dyer, G. P. (1995). "Gold, Silver and the Double Florin" (PDF). British Numismatic Journal. 64: 114–125.

The decision to defer the export licence followed a recommendation to the DCMS in 2017 by the Reviewing Committee On The Export Of Works Of Art And Objects Of Cultural Interest (RCEWA) who objected on all three of its Waverley criteria. RCEWA member Lowell Libson explained at the time, “Sir Alfred Gilbert, a leading but mercurial light in the British ‘New Sculpture’ movement, is now regarded as one of the greatest European sculptors of the period. This monumental portrait bust of the Queen-Empress is not only an important icon made at the apogee of British power but a complex and hugely sympathetic image. It is also a tour de force of marble carving, a medium which Gilbert rarely employed.” Den Watts ( Leslie Grantham) evicts Alfie Moon ( Shane Richie) and his family on Christmas Eve after buying the Vic. Robinson, Brian (1992). Silver Pennies & Linen Towels: The Story of the Royal Maundy. London: Spink & Sons Ltd. ISBN 978-0-907605-35-5. Bianca Butcher ( Patsy Palmer) gives birth to her son Liam Butcher in the pub on Christmas Day 1998, assisted by Grant Mitchell ( Ross Kemp). The decision to defer the export licence follows a recommendation by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA), administered by The Arts Council. To show that she was a woman as well as a queen, Victoria wore a simple white dress instead of royal robes, a style followed by many brides ever since. Plunkett, pp. 147–48. For further discussion of Queen Victoria’s engagement with the photographic medium in the interest of self-promotion and image making, see Adrienne Munich, Queen Victoria’s Secrets (New York: Columbia University Press, 1996); and Margaret Homans, Royal Representations: Queen Victoria and British Culture, 1837–1876 (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1998). Although the bust appears highly naturalistic, Gilbert did not work from the life but entirely from photographs, using his own mother as a model for the drapery, saying at the time: “One was Queen of my country – the other Queen of my heart.” W. & D. This portrait bust is made of a light-coloured soft wood and is about 31cm tall. The enlarged head and youthful face on this bust is typical of Yoruba carving and is intended to indicate the serenity and wisdom of the person being portrayed. The Yoruba are an ethnic group concentrated around present-day Nigeria and Benin. The bust was bought for Queen Victoria by Colonel Henry McCullum (1852–1919), Governor of the British Lagos Colony (a region in the southern part of Nigeria). We know that McCullum bought the bust from the artist and sent it to the queen as a gift in 1897. He says in a letter to the head of the queen's personal household that:

Appearance and development [ edit ] The former College Park Hotel in Harlesden, on which the design for The Queen Victoria was based. The rooms that she grew up in provide a fascinating glimpse into her former life. The statue of her, created by her daughter Princess Louise and unveiled in 1893, still stands outside the palace today. To do good was your aspiration and you were joy and happiness to us’: mourning photography and family memory Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna and Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia, the Queen's granddaughter and grandson-in-law (representing the Emperor of Russia)

A fight breaks out between the Slaters and the Truemans, resulting in Paul Trueman ( Gary Beadle) being arrested for assault. The Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest is an independent body, serviced by The Arts Council, which advises the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport on whether a cultural object, intended for export, is of national importance under specified criteria. The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria was officially celebrated on 22 June 1897 to mark the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession on 20 June 1837. Queen Victoria was the first British monarch ever to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. Victoria took the opportunity, when inspecting proposed changes to the shilling in June 1888, to lobby Goschen for the inclusion of her title as empress of India ( INDIAE IMPERATRIX, abbreviated as IND. IMP. on the coinage). Since the act allowing Victoria to assume the Indian title had forbidden its use in the United Kingdom, Goschen took no action on the request, but Victoria got her way with the following issue of coins, which debuted in 1893, [52] as the cabinet ruled in 1891 that the abbreviation could appear as British coins also circulated in the colonies. [53]Archie Mitchell ( Larry Lamb) is murdered (see Who Killed Archie?) on Christmas Day when Stacey Slater ( Lacey Turner) pushes the bust of Queen Victoria onto his head. Den Watts ( Leslie Grantham) is murdered by his second wife Chrissie Watts ( Tracy-Ann Oberman) with Pauline Fowler's ( Wendy Richard) dog-shaped doorstop; she buries his body under concrete in the cellar of the pub. In some centres, the children's concerts were quite extravagant. The Band of the Royal Grenadiers provided musical support for the Festival Chorus of the Toronto School Children's performance at Exhibition Park in Toronto. It featured several well-known patriotic and traditional songs, as well as other pieces created especially for the occasion, in addition to renditions of God Save the Queen, The Maple Leaf Forever, and Rule, Britannia!.
