About this deal

Viktor Krum is a student at Durmstrang wizarding school. He is ushered forward by Professor Karkaroff after Karkaroff has greeted Dumbledore, and is led into the warmth of the castle; he has a slight head-cold. Karkaroff: " Severus, you cannot pretend this isn't happening! It's been getting clearer and clearer for months. I am becoming seriously concerned, I can't deny it —" Severus Snape: " Then flee. Flee — I will make your excuses. I, however, am remaining at Hogwarts." — Igor's fear after his Dark Mark began to burn [src]

Viktor spent a lot of time at Hogwarts in the library, as he had become attracted to Hermione Granger. Each day, he went to the library with the intention of talking to her, but could not work up the courage. The groups of infatuated girls continued to follow him, lingering behind bookcases and watching him. [4] The First Task [ ] File:Kiks.jpg At Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley's wedding in 1997, Viktor complimented Hermione upon seeing her, but was disappointed to learn that she and Ron Weasley were "sort of" a couple. [5] Harry Potter [ ] File:Harry-Potter-1-.jpg Krum waits at the judges table by the lake, waiting for the second task to begin. Krum attempts to Transfigure himself into a shark for the task, to allow him to breathe underwater. He is partially successful, but it is not a good Transfiguration: he retains his human body, but has the head of a shark. His new teeth are positioned very badly for biting anything smaller than a dolphin, and he is in danger of harming Hermione as he tries to bite at her ropes. Krum is hit on the shoulder by Harry, who hands him a jagged stone; seizing it, Krum begins to cut Hermione free from the statue of the merperson. Once she is free, Krum grabs her around the waist and swims towards the surface of the lake. Krum is the second champion to return with their hostage. He is awarded forty points for the task.Like Madame Maxime, the Headmistress of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Karkaroff was outraged when Harry Potter's name was chosen from the Goblet of Fire, giving Hogwarts two champions instead of one. While he had to accept Harry's presence in the competition, he consistently gave Harry lower scores on the tasks and blatantly favoured Krum over the other champions. He also sneaked around to gather information on the tasks in hopes of giving Krum an advantage.

Krum joins Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Entrance Hall to say goodbye to Hermione. He asks to speak to Hermione alone, and the pair walk away from the crowd and out of sight. When the pair return soon after, Krum tells Harry that he liked Cedric Diggory; the boy was always polite to Krum, even though he was from Durmstrang. Krum scowls as Harry asks whether they have a new headmaster yet, and shrugs indifferently. He is surprised but gratified when, just as he is walking away, Ron asks for his autograph, and signs a fragment of parchment for him. In 1994, he played in the final of the Quidditch World Cup. The Irish won the match, but Viktor caught the Golden Snitch to end the match on his terms. Later in the year, he was part of the Durmstrang delegation sent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the Triwizard Tournament. Subsequently, he was selected by the Goblet of Fire as the Durmstrang Champion, and competed bravely. However, the Tournament ended in tragedy with the death of Cedric Diggory, and Viktor returned home. In 1997, he attended the wedding of Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley.Viktor means the "victorious one," appropriate for a forceful Quidditch player. The name may have been intended by J. K. Rowling to be ironic, as Viktor competes in two major tournaments in Goblet of Fire (the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament) and loses both, and Durmstrang never wins the Triwizard Tournament. In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Karkaroff also turned in Barty Crouch Jnr for torturing Alice and Frank Longbottom.
