About this deal

In terms of RAM size, a minimum of 8GB is fine, 16GB is recommended, 32GB is overkill (unless you like to live dangerously ;)) I want to replace my Drobo DAS with NAS and likely to get the Synology 8-bay 1821+ though I noticed you mentioned a new one coming out that will be more powerful. I have an ASUS Creator B 660 motherboard with both 1 gbe and 2.,5 gbe and want to connect the Synology to the 2.5 gbe for LAN directly to PC to get 2.5 gbe. Won’t edit off the Synology but want to have fast storage.

This was perhaps the most logical option. There are a lot of Xeon E-2100/ Xeon E-2200 series platforms on the market, especially in mATX. Cooling is not an issue here since there are many low power options. Intel Xeon E 2276G Cover Low Noise: For powerful airflow out of the box, the case comes preset with 2 x 9025 fans(90mm*90mm*25mm); 1 x 6025 fan(60mm*60mm*25mm). Greatly improve the heat dissipation capacity and Very Quiet SSH — (Secure Shell) A shell terminal that uses command line to access the NAS operating system directly over a network using a client like PuTTY Good to see that some brands still know what’s what, and know what to focus on, while others have become a proprietary circus act, defecating all over their customers. When I discovered the U-NAS NSC-800, I immediately knew which case I’d be using in my next DIY NAS build. When I did wind up building the DIY NAS: 2016 Edition, I knew that I’d have to go ahead and use this as an opportunity to upgrade my own NAS. That upgrade included also swapping out the CPU, motherboard, power supply, and RAM too, but of all the upgrades, the one I enjoyed most was using the U-NAS NSC-800 case. If I had written this blog at any point between late 2015 and the spring of 2019, it would’ve found itself perched atop this list of favorite cases. The 2-compartment design keeps the heat from the hard drives from washing over your motherboard and ensures the air pulled over the drives has a straight shot out of the case. I have 8, 7200-rpm drives and after 48 straight hours of file copying, temps were all b/t 47C and 51C. They idle at around 44C. Those are not bad temps at all for eight, 7200-prm disks crammed together in a quiet case. When it comes to NAS cases, the size of the motherboard they can accommodate plays a significant role in determining their differences. ITX and ATX NAS cases differ in this aspect, with ITX cases being smaller and accommodating smaller motherboards compared to their ATX counterparts. This means that ATX motherboards have more PCIe lanes, making them better suited for multi-GPU setups or users who want to use multiple PCIe devices. So if you need a space-saving build, you can see our slim ATX cases for inspiration. How many hard drives can fit inside a mini ITX NAS case? All the NAS solutions listed can be accessed DIRECTLY via an ethernet/network cable being connected from your PC/Mac system, to the NAS RJ45 port for 100MB/s and higher connectivity

Hi Sher, I apologize for this late reply. I had misconfigured the comments. There are two 4-bay cases that take a Mini- ITX case that I think would be suitable: Some things were clear, I was going for 8x 3.5” bays. It would have a server grade mini-ITX motherboard and 32GB of ECC RAM, internal SSDs for boot and I would likely need a PCIE HBA to get the number of ports required. I also wanted to keep it as compact, quiet and low-power as possible, and this would influence PSU and fan choices. The only thing of note during the test was the LSI 9211 HBA had been left in RAID (IR) mode. Following the very comprehensive instructions I found here: https://nguvu.org/freenas/Convert-LSI-HBA-card-to-IT-mode/ this took less than 5 minutes to flash to the correct version of IT mode firmware. Hey guys… If you guys dont want it standing up…. you can lay it down with vents down….. and put something under the NAS , in all 4 corners… taa-daa 🙂 vents-heating problem solved 🙂 hehe Thanks for all you do for all NAS pros, enthusiasts, and hobbyists out there. QQ for you. How come the TVS h1288 dropped off from your 8 bay list from last year? Are you recommending the TVS h874 over it? Thanks again!! Ahead of each DIY NAS build comes lots of time researching components’ specifications and prices. The two components I wind up putting the most amount of time and energy into researching are the motherboard and the case. In the eight years that I’ve been researching and building DIY NAS machines, I’m confident that I’ve seen or glanced at nearly every single case that meets the above criteria.

Would you please do a performance test of such hardware raid comparing it to software raids like Synology SHR-1/2 since Synology always have a performance issue with SHR, so I wonder if this is no longer an issue with a hardware alternative All NAS solutions (regardless of brand) feature the ability to host a shared drive on your PC/Mobile/Laptop systems that are synchronized with the NAS via the network/internet, but is shown in your native operating system file manager (i.e Mac Finder or Windows Explorer) As we saw in our FreeNAS Mini XL Plus Review 8-bays and 10GbE, the 8-bay FreeNAS platform works very well, so we wanted to replicate in a system with larger fans. One major note here is that the CS381 is a 28L design measuring 400mm (W) x 225mm (H) x 316mm (D) or 15.75″ (W) x 8.86″ (H) x 12.44″ (D). It feels like a large system even though it is based around a mATX size motherboard. Motherboard and CPU Selection My NAS is running with an LSI 9207-4i4e with a single external SFF-8088 miniSAS connector. I have a second LSI 9207-8i inside also. That test at the start to show power needs to go. Two vms sitting completely idle, and two video streams with deciding happening on your pc gpu is basically just a test of sending the same file to the same place twice. A raspberry pi should be able to pass this test.

I prefer the Fractal Design Node 804. More and larger fans. It can still take full size PCI cards and full size ATX power supplies. It puts the board in a separate airflow pattern than the power supply and drives. A bit unique on form factor since it’s a big (almost) cube. This mini-size NAS-compatible enclosure has a capacity of 22 liters and can hold up to twelve 2.5″ SAS, including four internal and 8 external hot-swappable 3.5″ SATA drives for ease of access. Aside from simple usage, I don’t think you can dispute how premium and feature-rich this high-quality, robust, and attractive case is. it would be great if you dig into the tvs-h474 just because of how different it is. I think a lot of users would be trying to decide between that and the tvs-472xt, especially us creators who want to edit off of it but might be wanting scalability because their creative studios may growHello, great video, well I am new with this NAS thing, I want to buy the same model, DS1821+, and I want to populate it with 8 14tb drives… but I have a question… Is it also necessary to populate it with the SSDs NVME??… Thanks. The 60mm fan that ventilates the upper (motherboard) compartment weirdly comes with a molex connector for its power, instead of a 3 or 4 pin motherboard-power connector. Adapters from molex to 3-pin are common and easy to source, while the reverse are not and I ended up having to replace the fan itself si I could power it from a Motherboard connector and not the overloaded SATA rail (the only PSU line with a molex connector). Motherboard Support: Various ITX motherboards in the market: 17X17cm (6.7“*6.7“); Micro-ATX motherboards 24X24cm (9.6“*9.6“)
