He ended up choosing a young lawyer, studying for his doctorate at Harvard, called Zaki Hashim. Narriman’s engagement to Hashim took place when she was just 16, but her heart wasn’t in the match. And for a strange reason too.

This is the Egyptian version of Cinderella and has very old origins. In this tale, a girl is kidnapped and sold into slavery in a few different countries. She is bought by a man who gives her shoes because she loves to dance. When a bird steals her shoe and drops it on the prince, the story we all know, becomes clear. Farouk inherited his father’s title and throne at the young age of 16, mere months after he left the palace to study in England. Upon his father's passing, he returned to Egypt to fulfill his duties as king, but he had no experience of what that entailed, and no understanding of how to win his people’s hearts. Although Egyptians wanted to think kindly of Farouk, he began to lose favor once the people realized he only cared about himself and his own hedonistic lifestyle. absolutely stunning, with the most beautiful colourful illustrations far, far removed (thankfully) from the usual pink prim princessy type retellings that we usually see in Cinderella. She did come home after she got better, but not for long. A few months later she went into a coma and never woke up. After ten days in the hospital, she passed on February 16, 2005, at the age of 75. However, at the time, my mind was still travelling inside a bubble. It was a ‘European bubble’ in which most of the ideas, pictures and words were shaped in Europe. Today, there are many more books and stories that allow children to hear voices from around the world and that encourage them to move beyond a single story.Talk about parts of the story which are like other versions of Cinderella your child knows and parts which are different. The story of Cinderella is much older than I thought and Cinderella of the Nile is so similar and yet so different from the ‘traditional’ version. Cinderella of the Nile is an eclectic mix of fairy tale and folklore. The reader, or explorer of a new world, follows Rhodopis on her journey. It is a story woven with golden threads of hopeful words from characters who hold wisdom, courage and kindness – traits which enhance Rhodopis’ beauty. Her kind actions radiate a pure and unrivalled beauty that ultimately gives her the happy ending she truly deserves. You can’t have a queenly past and not have stories to tell. Journalists and writers constantly hounded Narriman to share snippets from her past by writing her memoirs or agreeing to interviews. She remained firm until the end though and closed the door on all such offers. Except for one interview, recorded close to the time of her passing.

I love the discussion the books opens up about the universality of some stories and how they originate in different places and shift as cultures blend. There is no account of her marriage, and neither she nor Fahmi talked to the press or to anyone who would blab. It does seem though that she was happy and Fahmi genuinely cared for her well-being. In it, she is a red-headed Greek girl who is taken to Egypt as a slave. Majan Vafaeian's illustrations are exotic and colorful. Simply beautiful! Like many children growing up after the Second World War, I learned of the world's great fairy tales, including Cinderella, through the retellings of Andrew Lang. I still treasure my childhood copy of his Blue Fairy Book in a Longmans, Green & Co first edition from 1949. It has a little orange label: People's Bookshop, 45 Kerk Street, Johannesburg.
