About this deal

Way out in the furthest part of the known world, a tiny stronghold exists all on its own, cut off from the rest of human-kin by monsters that lurk beneath the Snow Sea. When Arthur and Rose were little, they were heroes in the Land of Roar, an imaginary world that they found by climbing through the folding bed in their grandad’s attic. Roar was filled with things they loved – dragons, mermaids, ninja wizards and adventure – as well as things that scared them (including a very creepy scarecrow. . .) This turned out to be a fun story, an homage to imagination. It’s a portal fantasy featuring a world completely invented by imagination. It has a mermaid-witch (“Mitch”) and a wizard-ninja (“Win”). Ha. The villain is a scarecrow-crow, hard to visualize but thankfully some detailed illustrations bring him to life.

Twins Arthur and Rose played “Roar” when they were little. But they’re getting older and growing apart as Rose is desperate to belong to the in-crowd. The book is as much about their relationship as it is about Roar.In the third mysterious tale of Eerie-on-Sea, it's almost Ghastly Night, and the Shadowghast—an ancient spirit in a lantern—lurks in wait for the power to enslave the town. I have always loved reading and I studied English at university just so that I could read a bit more. Next I found my way into secondary teaching and discovered that I loved it too: I got to read more books, show off and hang out with very funny teenagers. What a great job!

The first in a new children’s fantasy adventure series, full of imagination, humour and heart, and with echoes of Peter Pan, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Neverending Story and Jumanji. This funny, captivating story is filled with the painful pangs of growing up and the transporting qualities of imagination' Guardian As I’ve mentioned above, this book would be great for a younger class because of the fantasy elements and accessibility, and yet would still fit in brilliantly with an older class, meaning it’ll likely find itself being passed between many children. Thankfully, Egmont put a great deal of effort into printing The Land of Roar properly; the book feels solidly built and should hold up well in a classroom. On the face of it, The Land of Roar is a traditional fantasy book, providing a fun escape to a far-away world that would appeal to younger readers, especially as the vocabulary is not too challenging; dig deeper though, and you’ll find a number of messages woven throughout that will resonate with older children too. The importance of holding on to your childhood imagination and creativity features fairly prominently as a theme, making it great for children at the end of primary school. For too many people, growing up means leaving behind adventurous stories for those more grounded in realism, which is such a shame as there’s plenty of time for readers to carry on enjoying both types of stories as they get older. year old twins Rose and Arthur have grown up spending holidays with their fun loving granddad, but as they have grown older they have started to grow apart. Arthur still wants to play imaginative games whilst Rose would rather be on her phone, now in the final summer holidays before starting secondary school their relationship and imaginations are about to be tested. The brother and sister relationship between Rose and Arthur shows the natural ups and downs all siblings go through, and therefore feels realistic and relatable to children reading the book. This is great for children who may themselves be going through a bad patch with their siblings, as it shows that through all their differences exists an unbreakable bond. The familial bond is extended through to their grandad, who also features in the book. As little old man with asthma, keeping the magic of childhood alive and looking after the grandchildren, he reminds me of my own grandad. From the books I’ve read, it seems fairly uncommon to have siblings and a grandparent both feature, as they’re often built around a single child facing ‘the hero’s journey’ alone, and so it was refreshing to read.

Arthur is not sure what to make of their game, could it have been a real place they went to or was it all in his imagination? His sister Rose knows it was all made up and refuses to even think about the possibility that it might not have been in their heads, she is more concerned with her new phone and the teenage girl next door.Arthur and his twin sister Rose have been arguing a lot recently. Rose has got a new phone for her birthday and seems to be more interested in that than anything else. Arthur and Rose used to play together and enjoy their imaginary land of roar but Rose is so over that now. She can't see why Arthur still wants to play silly games when they are going to secondary school. It is a great book to read. Full of fun and imagination. The Land of Roar is truly a special place!

This is proof, not that it's needed, that Jenny McLachlan is a writer of enormous heart and versatility. I'm a really big fan' Phil Earle, award-winning author of Being Billy and co-author of Get Me Out of Here! with Andy McNabEn «The Land of Roar» conoceremos a Arthur y a Rose, dos hermanos de once años que van a pasar las vacaciones a casa de su abuelo. A rip-roaring, island-hopping adventure - and unforgettable ecological fable - from the award-winning author of Wildspark and Brightstorm.
