About this deal

It is a sensitive restoration of the original architecture’s qualitative feel, internally expressing it to powerfully orchestrate and punctuate the spaces Rome’s death throes sputtered out not in the fifth century, as is widely believed, but in 1453 when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Sultan, Mehmet II, “the Conqueror.” He then renamed the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire Istanbul. Yet the Ottoman Empire—eventually Rome’s rival in its vastness—did not reach its full extent until the reign of the Conqueror’s great-grandson, Suleyman “the Magnificent.” The Lion House is the story of Suleyman’s rise to greatness laid out in glorious prose. It’s the first of a planned trilogy by author Christopher de Bellaigue about the man celebrated as the longest-reigning and most influential leader of Islam after Muhammad. Who just read an entire book thinking she was reading historical fiction, when it wasn't? And if she had just read the inside flap, probably would have figured that out a lot sooner? And who actually looked up some of the things in the book, thinking "No, surely not ..."? Freshen up in the bathroom on the first floor which houses a bath with an overhead shower, noticing the eye for detail in the lion motif within the basin. Like the Beehive House next door, the architect of the Lion House was Truman Angell. The house had 26 bedrooms to accommodate Brigham Young’s large family. Brigham Young was perhaps the best known of the Latter-day Saints who practiced plural marriage in the early Church. His family included 55 wives and 56 children. An official manifesto in 1890 led to the end of the practice of plural marriage in the Church.

These days, Lion House it is a separate entity and has been transformed into a grade two listed family home. Read More Related Articles

But you’re right, now I look at it, White Lion House is a ‘studied composition in vertical elements incised lightly with a pattern by Eley Kishimoto in a slightly token, weak reprise of the main tower’s sculpted skin . . .’ Thanks for that. Lying at the southern end of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a perfect example of an English market town - market place with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and almshouses. In its heyday in the 18th-century, the town was a fashionable social centre, and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer in terms of restaurants and inns and is regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters - but don’t expect a bargain! For those who prefer more outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by and for thrill seekers Alton Towers with its exciting collecting of rides and attractions is just a short drive away.

A real home from home and we didn’t want to leave! Would highly recommend this cottage, location is just above the market square in Ashbourne so perfect for exploring the town itself and local area. The games room was a fantastic addition for the kids..... and adults! We’d definitely stay here again. The advert reads: “Lion House is a well presented and spacious Grade II Listed period family home, boasting many original features and is located in a secluded position overlooking its own private enclosed garden. The buildings were formed of four structurally independent parts and exhibit remarkable structural ingenuity. We undertook major surgery to the complicated structure, which placed considerable constraints on modification, particularly in the Link Bridge, where a post-tensioned slab spans St Giles High Street. A carefully detailed sliding glass façade opening on to the new square has been inserted beneath, retaining the bridge’s appearance while providing a large new space for retail. In Centre Point House, several slabs have been removed to form a cathedral-like space, extending over 7m up to new clerestory glazing, carving out of the structure bays of expressive sculptural piers. Keen cyclists will enjoy the challenge of the hilly terrain in and around Moretonhampstead with a network of bridleways, byways and quiet lanes to discover whether you're embarking on a long day in the saddle, off-roading or simply taking a leisurely cycle to take in the views.

It tells the story of Suleyman's rise to power in the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire's relationship with Venice, Charles V the "Holy Roman Emperor," and Francis I of France. More intimately, it tells the story of Ibrahim Pasha, a Westerner who became Suleyman's close friend as an enslaved boy and rose with him to power, wealth, and influence. Hurrem, the woman who was captured in what is now Ukraine, made a concubine of the Sultan, and eventually became his wife, is also depicted here. Lion House was formerly part of Brattleby Hall, which was the living quarters for the decorated wing commander who was also the first commanding officer of the famous 617 squadron. Considered detailing lends a qualitatively haptic feel to the finish, down to sapele timber flooring and handrails to the balconies Every detail had been thought of and was shown through the highest quality amenities. The location was the perfect walk into town and surrounded by cafes, pubs and restaurants, as well as walking routes. We would definitely return, thank you :) We were very comfortable and enjoyed the luxury of having so much space for just the two of us. If you want to be on Dartmoor then the location cannot be beaten, with walks from the door in all directions. Moretonhampstead has everything you need for a week's stay, including a choice of good places to eat. For all its finesse, this still inevitably feels somewhat like an office conversion – if a very high-end one. Indeed with the rather sombre monochromatic colour scheme carried throughout in finishes and materials, a splash or two more of Mad Men colour might have more successfully invoked the spirit of the 60s. But this is a very effectively realised conversion which will undoubtedly form the heart of the area’s revitalisation. In 1870, the Lion House parlor hosted a series of meetings that led to the creation of the Young Women organization of the Church. The Lion House also functioned as classroom space for the nearby LDS University in the early twentieth century. In the 1960s, the building was preserved from demolition and turned into an event venue. Very spacious and we had a very comfortable stay. There is a cloakroom in addition to the 3 bathrooms. There is a notebook to write any housekeeping points - which we completed for the cleaners for next guests- a few niggles.. An attempt to break this up saw the cutting through of New Oxford Street in 1850, but it remained a relatively impoverished warren of streets until the 1960s when the Centre Point scheme effectively blew this apart forever.
