About this deal

The phono switchers Graham pointed out would seem to be by far the cheapest and easiest option, I don't understand why you seem to have ruled these out? Okay you have to move 2 switches rather than 1 because they are only 3 wide but that doesn't seem such a hardship. How about 2 of these? They are push button which should be easier for you to switch and don't look too bad from the front - it looks like they switch 5 phonos which is unfortunate as you need the extra one for the .1.

Most often the computer is the source, it play music into the amp. That is sound comes OUT of the computer and goes INTO the amp. Required because my AV receiver doesn't support HDMI. I might just live with one source via optical and foregoe HD audio on there for the time being - until I can afford an HDMI amp.Just in case I can achieve my aim with what I've bought from Maplins, I'll post below what I bought. Maybe you or somebody else can suggest a specific combination of usage to achieve mono properly on one on my duplicated stereo feeds. I appreciate however that may not be possible. Yeah, I can understand that. It's why I personally chose to go with the hard. There are a few fine cable makers that make soft splitters from their own designs. My reasoning, valid or not, was that to ensure the best sound I'd need to use products from the same maker and of the same design if I went that route. Also that route can be more expensive. Not saying I'm right in my thinking it was just my logic path. I saw the below product yesterday, but anybody know if I can get one here in the UK? I might have looked in the wrong places. This provides isolation between the left and right inputs so the preceding splits are not mono'ed up as well.

I don't want to majorly derail anything that may be going on in this thread, but I came here about to start a thread on how to make stereo into mono using phono RCA connections and cables, so this topic caught my attention.

I was originally looking high and low for a stereo/mono switch to put into 1 of the 2 existing feed chains, which would have been fine, but I couldn't find one. A simple splitter has three phono connections on it, one in, two out. All three are simply wired together so the two outputs are a dead short circuit. Which is why if fails miserably if you use it in reverse as a combiner. If you connect two outputs to the splitter then you short circuit the pair of them. What's 'right' here is a simple question of not doing something that will reduce sound quality, ie introduce distortion. That's trivial to ascertain and is not a subjective matter. And *anyone* can reach the same answer, it's NOT a personal thing at all. If all you can advise is 'try for yourself and see if you like the result' then that is NO advice at all. The guy doesn't want to do that, or he would not have asked in the first place.

IMO some did and some didn't. Or at least I didn't seem to notice if they did. I found a preference for the hard type of high copper content. In fact I'm using these in my system now. I've found that the vast majority of hard splitters are brass. The higher conductive metals are too soft and expensive in general. The LATs that I use are of the highest copper content I've found so far. I'm not advocating hard splitters they're just my personal preference so far. YMMV.

If the computer is close to the amp, typically 1 meter is sufficient. Likely both your Receiver and Computer are STEREO. In this case why would you want to run mono? Which is what you are implying. You are implying fanning one source connector out into two mono connections? Why? I've used splitters myself, both hard (like you linked) and "soft". By soft I mean the spliiter is a cable design that splits as opposed to having a hard body. Such as this.
