The original has very little character development, beyond the face-value expectations of each of the dog breeds. So I enjoy learning a bit more about each of the characters. Schnitzel von Krumm is the star of several of his own adventures as well as appearing in Hairy Maclary's. A red standard smooth-haired Dachshund, Schnitzel's legs are the shortest in the gang. Dodd's pictures are good, but the rhyming verse is even better - delightful to read aloud and soon learned by heart.' - Independent on Sunday
