Our audience in the UK is great. There are perhaps parts of Europe where we are legitimately a big band. Where we have more relevance in terms of the wider media. There is history of bands that didn’t break in the same way in the UK that they broke in Europe. Muse or Depeche Mode – quite often bands that come from a slightly darker palette. With a lot of the mainland European audience, there’s a loyalty. I don’t know why that is. I think the media and the radio in those countries work in a slightly different way. Are perhaps less fixated on what is new.” Editors released their sixth album Violence on 9 March 2018, followed by their seventh album EBM on 23 September 2022. Landfill indie” is a phrase that never fails to set Tom Smith’s teeth on edge. “I’ve always felt that term was awful,” says Smith, frontman of wintry indie shape-shifters Editors. “Really f***ing rude. Really dismissive.”

Musicians burning out due to excessive touring is becoming a talking point within the industry. In recent years, Fontaines D.C., Arlo Parks and others have postponed live dates citing their psychological wellbeing. The growing acceptance that musicians are human beings with the same mental frailties as everyone else is, agrees Smith, a change for the better. Smith's vocal style has been compared to that of post-punk singers such as Ian Curtis, Paul Banks, Robert Smith, and Michael Stipe. [ citation needed] He mainly uses a Gibson ES-335 when playing guitar, [11] whilst also playing a Fender Telecaster Custom. He has stated that most of Editors' music begins with him composing on his piano or acoustic guitar. [12] One of the secrets to their longevity is that they’ve built a substantial fan base outside the UK. In parts of the Continent, Editors are a proper stadium act and festival headliners. In this, they are a part of a secret history of British bands who found success internationally while initially receiving disdain at home. It’s quite a club. The fact that I was falling in love with the wife of my mentor and friend, a man who had gone out of his way to help me, and shown me nothing but kindness, didn’t trouble my conscience at all. Book Review: The Editor’s Wife, Clare Chambers Book Review: The Editor’s Wife, Clare Chambers

The secondary characters, Gerald and Carol, and Christopher’s relationships with them – some of the dialogue between them was wonderfully judged! Somewhat lazily, the plot drifts for a few chapters as Chambers introduces us to Christopher’s relationship with Gerald, his brother, and his ex-wife. It is a meandering read at this point, but this was a novel where I liked these secondary characters more than the main one. Gerald, possibly with some form of learning difficulty, is semi-vagrant and semi-squatting in their father’s house after his death and delaying the inevitable sale of the property was a delight. And Carol, the ex-wife, was wonderfully self-obsessed – having left Christopher following an affair and marrying her lover, she proceeds to ask whether Christopher would donate sperm for her. Thomas Michael Henry Smith was born in Northampton on 29 April 1981, the son of high school science teachers Sylvia and John Smith. He grew up in Stroud, Gloucestershire, [1] where he attended Woodchester Endowed Primary School and learned to play the guitar under the guidance of the school's headmaster. [ citation needed] He then attended Archway School in Stroud, where his parents taught physics and chemistry. He later studied music technology at Staffordshire University and met his future Editors bandmates. The use of the manuscript to narrate the love affair did not, to my mind, work as well as it could have!Maintaining collective creativity isn’t easy. Searching for stimulus – things to keep it fresh and feel vibrant – is important,” says Smith. “That might mean working in different places. Or working with different people, producer-wise. Or embracing the idea of somebody else coming into the band.”
