I think the author started this story strong. I was really into it and finished this in a day. However, there were so many twists in the end that it got a little silly. Plus, I think the whole ‘why’ could have been better if told another way. Fans of Freida McFadden and Daniel Hurst should eat this up. The novel follows protagonist Erika Kohut [ˈeːʀika ˈkoːhʊt], a sexually and emotionally repressed piano teacher, as she enters into a sadomasochistic relationship with her student, Walter Klemmer [ˈvaltɐ ˈklɛmɐ], the results of which are disastrous. Like much of Jelinek's work, the chronology of the events in the book is interwoven with images of the past and the internal thoughts of characters. [2]

The plot twists did not feel natural; rather they felt like they were crammed in so that this would become a thriller but maybe some people would see it differently and actually enjoy that. The tips are born out of years of experience, experimentation, success and (certainly in my case) failure in the classroom. Elizabeth's superiority complex also grated on me. Her attempts to be the 'cool' teacher by ignoring rules like swearing in class undermined the profession. Furthermore, her erratic behavior left me questioning her sanity, or was she being gaslit by her husband? The ending, however, takes a surprising turn that challenges this perception.
