Japanese vodka and gin producer Ukiyo has secured a listing with drinks retailer Dan Murphy’s, with its Ukiyo’s Blossom Gin, Yuzu Gin, and Rice Vodka to be distributed across Australia. Old Tom is a slightly sweetened style of gin made famous in the 18th Century, usually sweetened with either Sugar or Honey. To qualify your product must be marketed / branded as an Old Tom Gin and cannot simply contain Sugar or Honey. THE JUDGING CRITERIA Bittersweet, zesty and fantastic when paired with campari and vermouth, Silent Pool makes some of the best modern gins coming out of England. The Hanami festival is a celebration of the blooming of cherry blossom in Japan’s parks and countryside, traditionally held in Spring.

Any young distillery will know that competition means that you have to be innovative, considered and motivated to succeed as a business. This must be reflected in everything you do. So we are expecting this category to be hotly contested and some incredible young distilleries to make it through to the peoples choice finals.Have you implemented a new process or system to reduce waste? Have you embraced new and unconventional materials that are more environmentally friendly? Are you working on exciting new ways to limit your carbon footprint? If so we want to hear from you... The Blossom Gin is crafted in Kagoshima, close to the Sakurajima volcano. It is made from grains that have been distilled into shōchū, then redistilled to include botanicals such as juniper, mandarin, spice plus the fragrant sakura flower. The result is bright, clean and punchy. If there’s only one hand-blown bottle on your drinks trolley, make it this one. Born in Bergen, Norway, Bareksten uses indigenous herbs and wild berries in its gin to create a spirit quite unlike anything else we tasted – in a good way. This coveted award will be shortlisted to between eight - twelve finalists by our panel of expert judges. If you’re after a traditional Plymouth gin, this is it. A must for any home bar, expect a punchy medicinal flavour with juniper and citrus at the fore. Our testers found the herbal, grassy flavours gave way to some faint sweetness, all wrapped up in a gently warming, bitter finish. As the birthplace of gin, we had high expectations for this Dutch bottle – and it delivered. There’s nothing run of the mill about it; the wheat-based spirit eschews the traditional botanical line-up in favour of a complex, fruit-forward mix of white peach, raspberry and Turkish rose. Our trusted panel of experts and consumer boozehounds sipped their way through over 100 different gins from leading distilleries and producers across the globe. Each was fully appraised for its complexity, length and finish, with in-depth discussions held on how best to serve it.

You’ll find Hepple gracing the leatherbound menus of Britain’s finest drinking dens – and with good reason, too. Distilled in the Northumberland wilds, a heady blend of botanicals undergoes a three-stage extraction, resulting in a vibrant gin that jumps out the glass from the get-go. If you like your spirit to lean heavily on the citrus and herbs (green juniper, pine, Douglas fir, savoury lovage, sandalwood), then you need to add a bottle to your line-up.

Ukiyo Rice Vodka was launched in December last year, and is crafted on the tropical island of Okinawa. It was produced in a distillery that makes the local rice spirit awamori, a liquid indigenous to Okinawa. To qualify for this category, the gin must not have any flavour, maceration or botanicals added post distillation. THE JUDGING CRITERIA

Our panel of expert judges will whittle down the entries to a shortlist of between 8 – 12 per award, with the results being announced to the public. Public Voting Opens Ukiyo Yuzu Gin is another head turner with the two tone colour design highlighting the mountains and the sea that surround the distillery. The gins were crafted on Japan’s Kyushu Island, with locally sourced grains distilled into shōchū. The shōchū is then infused with botanicals including juniper, mandarin and spices. Gins will be judged with a pre-determined tonic expertly chosen by The Gin To My Tonic. THE JUDGING CRITERIA We may be a nation of gin and tonic devotees, but that doesn’t mean your imagination has to stop at ‘ice and a slice’ when mixing up your chosen tipple. Read the gin’s label to find out which botanicals feature, and then choose a few as your garnish.Disclaimer* We class a 'Distilled Gin' as a gin that has had flavours/botanicals added or has been macerated post initial distillation. THE JUDGING CRITERIA To qualify for the bursary award, the distillery must be no more than two years old. THE JUDGING CRITERIA Made with a combination of 22 local Scottish herbs, it tastes like adventuring through the hedgerows of the Scottish Isles — and is the ideal base for a punchy gin martini.
