Internally the Xperia 10 V is very similar to its predecessor. It’s using the exact same Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G chip as last year’s phone, with the same 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There does appear to be an upgraded model with 8GB of RAM in some regions, although the UK doesn’t appear to be included. If 128GB of storage isn’t enough, you can upgrade storage via the Micro SD slot up to 1TB if you wish. It’s an OLED panel, with 10-bit colour and HDR support that ensures streaming TV shows and movies leave a good impression. Contrast is suitably epic, and shadow detail is impressive. Colours are a little on the cool side, but largely accurate – and easy to tweak using the RGB sliders in the display settings menu. Brightness has also been given a welcome boost for 2023, climbing north of 900 nits when outdoors in High Brightness Mode (HBM). Even without it there’s enough illumination here to challenge the top mid-range mobiles. Compared to the Pixel 7a, Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, or even the lightning-fast Poco F5, you can get a lot more for not a lot more, be it more processing power, faster charging or better long-term software support. This phone features fast charge technology - faster than standard charging, for when time is of the essence.
You don’t get wireless charging here, either – something we’re seeing in a lot more mid-range phones. Sony Xperia 10 V verdict Another Xiaomi phone definitely worth considering is the Poco X5 Pro. In many aspects, it is not too dissimilar to the Redmi Note 12 Pro, like the 6.67-inch, 10-bit Dolby Vision, HDR10+, 120Hz display, the IP53 ingress protection rating and the stereo speakers. There is also the identical 5,000 mAh battery with the same 67W fast charging. Once again, you will be missing out on a telephoto camera, though. Practicality concerns aside, the OLED panel in the Xperia 10 V is a joy when fully utilized. Multitasking has the space it needs to make proper sense, and the inherent colour profiling of the tech means HDR photos and movies really pop.

The question is, does the Xperia 10 V do enough to tempt users from the Xperia 1 V? Well… The Xperia 1 V has a better display While the Xperia 10 V can’t quite compete with its more premium sibling, its camera offering is not to be sniffed at – especially compared to the wider competition at the mid-range price. There is subtle variation in the blue of the sky that is captured nicely on the Xperia. In fact, colours in general are a key strength of the 10 V. There’s a warmth to the beige tones within the Verso family homestead and skin tones benefit from this too, with a richness that doesn’t extend to ruddy or overdone. Sony has delivered yet another compelling budget Android phone with the Xperia 10 V. Its picture and sound performance are hard to believe when we take into account how little it costs and, while it may not offer cutting-edge internal specs and the camera is hardly class-leading, it's comfortably the best budget phone on the market for movies and music.
Just like with the aforementioned Samsung phones, there is also a pretty viable step-down option in camp Xiaomi - the Redmi Note 12. The vanilla model gives up on some extras like HDR support on the display and stereo speakers. The overall user experience, however, is not that different. Although the slimmer shape of the screen makes reaching the other side easy with your thumb in standard portrait mode when scrolling the web or social media, the expanded nature of it means reaching up for things like notifications requires extra effort as well. The Xperia 10 V has more in the way of picture and sound upgrades than the 1 V, with the 6.1-inch OLED display (also 21:9 aspect ratio) now apparently 1.5 times brighter, which Sony says makes outdoor visibility better. The 10 V also gets a stereo speaker set-up this year, with a 20 per cent increase in volume and a more balanced and direct sound, which Sony says is supported with a low noise amplifier. Sony has improved the Xperia 10 V’s display compared to the 10 IV, but not in the way that we would have thought obvious. It’s a slightly larger 6.1in FHD+ OLED (up from 6in), and it’s a lot brighter. Sony claims a 50% increase, and I measured an impressive luminance of 613cd/m 2 with auto brightness turned off.The few bespoke additions are purpose-built for the 21:9 screen: a Side Sense toolbar opens with a double-tap, letting you open two apps in split screen, or have one on top of the other in a pop-up window. Apart from some custom icons and fonts, though, Android owners coming from other brands will feel right at home.
