About this deal

The human race is dying out fast, but the gods will save it. Not through divine action, no, but when we harvest their dead celestial bodies as the last resources in a depleted galaxy. Peter James is a British best selling writer of fictional crime novels. He has written 25 novels that have been translated into over 35 languages. His series featuring Detective Superintendent Roy Grace have sold over 14 million copies world wide. He has had six UK Sunday Times #1 books consecutively due to this series. Peter James was born on August 22, 1948 in Brighton, Sussex, England. His mother Cornelia James was the Queen’s Glovemaker. In two different cities in two different countries, two men wait for women they believe to be their soulmates. Unfortunately, the women never arrived and the men soon learn they've been conned.

Michael’s desperate and attractive fiancée, Ashley Harper, seeks Superintendent Roy Grace for his help, hoping to find her husband-to-be before the wedding in three days. Six years later, skeletal remains of a woman's body are found in a storm drain, leading DS Roy Grace on an international investigation as he races to save the life of a woman being pursued in Brighton. The sequel to this book, Looking Good Dead, was released in 2006 with the line, “They watch, they choose, they kill.” It begins when Tom Bryce attempts to return a lost CD to its owner and ends up being the witness to a horrible murder. Threatened with death if he should talk, Bryce’s wife talks him into making a statement to the team headed by Superintendent Roy Grace. When a woman's body is found in a Brighton bath, DS Roy Grace is called to the scene. Though it initially seems pretty straightforward, a sudden turn of events reveals the case to be much more sinister and complicated than he could have imagined.Central to the series is Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a no-nonsense and dogged cop, supported by a thoroughly capable team, including his best mate DI Glenn Branson. What it boils down to this time out, though, is that there’s nowhere near enough of the police team and too much attention paid to characters in whom it’s difficult to get invested. I love the sub stories that Peter writes, and the ending in each chapter makes you want to read the next. When James’ publisher, Pan Macmillan, came to him to ask him to create a new detective, James says he wanted to make Roy Grace a very separate kind of officer compared to other fictional investigators. He goes on to explain that much of his time was spent trying to determine what it is that detectives really do, and he discovered that their biggest job is to solve puzzles. How intriguing would it be to have a character that has a personal puzzle their own life? Who is Peter James? His father ran the business as well as an accountant. His sister Genevieve now runs the company along with her husband. He attended Charterhouse School and later attended Ravensbourne Film School. James spent a few years working in North America as a film producer and screenwriter. He got his start in 1970 on the Canadian children’s television show Polka Dot Door as an errand boy and later writer. He cofounded Movision Pictures in the nineties. As a child, Jodie Bentley's only two wishes were to be rich and to be attractive. A plastic surgeon helped her with the attractive part, so now she's working on marrying a rich man. The only hard part is getting rid of him once you've caught him.

The first Roy Grace book, Dead Simple, was released in 2005 by Pan Macmillan. The tagline read, “Four bodies, one suspect, no trace. The first case for Detective Superintendent Roy Grace.” From there, the story begins with a prank gone wrong. Michael Harrison disappears into the big city without a trace. Brighton is a lively town with a thriving cultural scene that's much bigger than the city's size might suggest. You'll find loads of street art, and a vegetarian will have no trouble at all finding tons of food options (though in fairness, the UK is pretty veg-friendly as a whole). Brighton's crowded streets and beaches James has also served two terms as Chair of the UK Crime Writers Association, and is also a board member of International Thriller Writers in the United States. What’s next for Roy Grace? All across the USA, people are showing up dead. The deaths don't appear to be connected in any way until one particular death occurs and gets the Secretary of Defense's attention. He arranges for a task force to investigate. Roy Grace is also different in that he will use anything and everything available to him to solve a case. He will use basics like pathology analysis and forensics, to mediums as far off the beaten path as the paranormal, getting input from mediums and clairvoyants about his work. Grace has his own belief system in ghosts and things that go bump in the night, and he brings that into his cases. In between jobs, Meg receives a summons for jury service. She’s excited – it might be interesting and will help distract her from constantly worrying about Laura. But when she is selected for the trial of a major Brighton drugs overlord, everything changes. Immortal Hulk is Ewing’s best work, and Immortal Hulk #25 is a cosmic sci-fi/horror hybrid that takes readers to a future iteration of the Marvel Universe where Hulk has inherited the mantle of Galactus as the “Breaker of Worlds,” a monster that literally punches through planets. Featuring stunning artwork from Germán García and Chris O’Halloran, this issue gives readers a taste of the terror in store for Georges Malik and crew if they do find a living god. Later that day, workmen dig up a long-dead woman in an entirely different part of the city. Though the cases initially seem unrelated, it doesn't take DS Roy Grace long to put the pieces together.

Meg Magellan's daughter is off on a gap year in South America, and she welcomes a stint on jury duty as a distraction. Unfortunately, she's assigned to the trial of a drug lord – and just a few days into the trial, she gets a call saying she needs to ensure a not guilty verdict if she ever wants to see her daughter again. DS Grace will set off on a trail that leads him from the shady antiques scene in Brighton to Europe and New York as he pursues the killer.

Book 2 | Looking Good Dead

If you're used to mysteries set in cosy English villages, gritty London, or the distinguished university cities of Oxford and Cambridge, Brighton may seem a very different sort of setting. It's a quirky coastal town about 50 miles south of London, and though it's quite distinctly British, it has a dash of San Francisco about it (or perhaps we should say San Francisco has a touch of Brighton). DS Roy Grace is sure Brian Bishop murdered his socialite wife. The only problem? He was sixty miles away, asleep in bed at the time of the murder. Has someone stolen Bishop's identity, or is he just a very clever killer? Well, the book is decently paced, with a lot of story threads running around. But sometimes, it gets a little too confusing not to mix up one with the other. There is a lengthy trial piece at the center of the main story and to be very honest, John Grisham would have him for breakfast, lunch and dinner for writing about a trial which kind of turns into a ordinary tale. There are some holes in the arguments presented by both sides, through which a hawkish Advocate could drive a tank through! Hot on the heels of this very disappointing book is the news that John Simm has been cast as Roy Grace in the TV adaptation. After being involved in a fatal traffic accident, Carly Chase receives word that the drivers of the other two vehicles have been tortured and murdered. DS Roy Grace has warned her that she could be next.

Brighton isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly unique – and by getting a taste of the city, you'll enhance your reading of the Roy Grace series. Peter James, born in 1948, is a bestselling British writer who holds a strong focus on crime fiction. His most popular novels to date remain the Roy Grace series, selling more than 14 million copies around the world. He has placed number one six times in the UK Sunday Times, as well as in countries such as France, Canada, and Russia. In a rather convoluted way, Meg is chosen to be the one who ensures Gready gets off and to make sure she complies a series of threats are made against Laura. Michael Harrison's friends decided it would be funny to bury him alive as a stag night prank. Unfortunately, they were killed in a car accident before they could retrieve him, leaving the man buried in an unknown location just days before his wedding. DS Roy Grace sets out to help his beautiful, distraught fiancee. Based in England in a city known to be full of criminals, Roy Grace’s department focuses on suspicious events and murder mysteries. One of the most popular murder-mystery novelists of his time, Peter James, wanted to give the dark city a personable protagonist who helped make the stories that needed to be told more light-hearted and easy to interpret.
